Consider how your small business can give back to your community this holiday season and make a meaningful impact. Hosting donation drives for food, toys, or clothing is a great way to involve your customers in charitable efforts. You can offer discounts or perks in exchange for contributions, encouraging more participation while spreading goodwill. Another idea is to partner with local nonprofits or charities to support causes that resonate with your business values. Whether through fundraising events, donating a portion of holiday sales, or offering your space for community initiatives, these efforts build stronger ties with both customers and the community. Giving back during the holidays uplifts those in need and highlights your business as one that values people over profit. It’s an opportunity to show your customers that shopping small means supporting businesses that truly care. Let your generosity this season inspire others and leave a lasting impression beyond the holidays. Are you giving back during the holidays with your small business? Drop it in the comments so others can participate in the initiative! #ABDC #cityofPG #takeonPG #indigenous #indigenousbusiness #indigenousentrepreneurs #smallbusiness #homebusiness

A helpful zoom-out on today’s #GivingTuesday efforts and the state of individual giving (thank you, Erika!). Yes, do it to participate in democracy in action (bonus: it will feel good)! And also… If you’re willing to peel back another layer, note that you can also help move the needle on work that yet needs to be done in giving. A fraction of philanthropy goes to Black- and Indigenous-led organizations, to grassroots organizations, and to funding social and racial justice work. (#Fundraising and #philanthropy connections, if you have updated numbers, please share or link in comments.) This year — and every year — consider the patterns in your own giving (thank you for giving and participating!) and whether adjustments might be needed to advance resource equity that is consistent with your values.
In 2023, 67% of total charitable #giving in America came from individuals, for a total of $557.16 billion. As magnificent as that sounds, and it is, as recently as 2013 that figure was as high as 73%. Contributing to your #community by giving a charitable gift is #democracy in action. You get to support the community cause, issue, or concern that you value. You directly support the work you think will make your community better. You are investing whatever amount is meaningful for you - no matter the size - to create true community, and to play a part in it. The average citizen makes two charitable donations per year, and the majority prefer to make their gift online via credit card. Does this sound like you? If you haven't already made your community investment for 2024, I encourage you to consider doing so this #GivingTuesday. Hundreds of organizations in your community can accept your support online and will be grateful to have you join their team.

Let’s talk about a common misconception within nonprofit circles: Can a 501(c)(7) social club act like a 501(c)(3) charitable organization? The truth is… No. While both types of organizations are nonprofits, their purposes, restrictions, and tax benefits are entirely different: ✅ 501(c)(3): • Focused on charitable, educational, or religious purposes. • Can fundraise publicly and offer tax-deductible donations. • Bound by strict rules ensuring its mission benefits the public. ✅ 501(c)(7): • Created for social or recreational activities (e.g., spouses’ clubs). • Revenue must come from members, not public donations. • Fundraising is limited to benefiting club operations, not charitable outreach. If you’re a spouses’ club (501(c)(7)) wanting to give back to the community, you must partner with a 501(c)(3) or explore setting one up separately. Blurring these lines can lead to IRS audits, revoked status, or fines. Bottom line: Know your status. Protect your mission. 📆 Registration Required: https://bit.ly/3OhE0zp

Being a philanthropist has little to do with the balance in your bank account. Philanthropy means being an integral part of your community. Here are six hugely impactful ways to practice philanthropy without spending a dime: 👉 Donate your time to a local food pantry. Every community has some sort of charitable organization that helps those less fortunate, and they all need help to do their work. 👉 Share your expertise by hosting an educational session at the local library. Whether it’s helping people to learn coding or how to do their taxes, your professional experience can benefit others. 👉 Volunteer for a charity you care about. Contact a local nonprofit that does work close to your heart and ask how you can help. 👉 Give blood. There’s a constant need for this precious resource, and you’ll do a lot of good by making it a habit. 👉 Help with fundraising. Nonprofits rely on the generosity of others to survive. You can help them reach their fundraising goals by becoming part of the effort. 👉 Join a board. Every nonprofit has a board, and they need people who care to be members. Financial donations are also always needed If you can afford to make them, but don’t let money be what stops you from making your community better through philanthropy. Time, treasure, talent, or whatever you can give. It’s easy and today is a great day to start. #philanthropy #donations #support
