Getting ready to launch the “Regional #Drought Consultations Summary Report (Part 2”) and “Blue-green algae: accumulation phenomenon and management strategies” report In #Mildura. The 60-strong crowd includes growers, along with regional stakeholders who were part of the stakeholder engagements, including many key senior people. Today’s report launch follows an informative farm tour by the #VicHub’s North-West Irrigated Horticulture Node, Mallee Regional Innovation Centre, for visiting academics from the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Science (School of Agriculture, Food and Ecosystem Sciences (SAFES)) and Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology. Stay tuned for results and outcomes from these two important reports. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/g3dysxfR #VicDroughtHub #AusAg #FutureDroughtFund #farming #droughtpreparedness

🌱 NDVI, which stands for "Normalized Difference Vegetation Index," is a standard measurement used in remote sensing to assess the health and density of vegetation in a given area. This index provides valuable information about crop health, making it a crucial tool for monitoring your agricultural plantations. 👉 With NDVI you can: Identify water stress: Detect areas with a lack of water to optimize irrigation. Monitor crop growth: Track the development of your plantations and make strategic decisions for higher yields. Map spatial variability of the field: Obtain a precise view of the different conditions within your land. The new Image Analysis Tool in DropControl provides a clear and detailed view of the condition of your crops using NDVI information. This facilitates informed decision-making to improve the yield and health of your plantations, thereby optimizing productivity and crop health.🌾 Interested in learning more? The hidden half of a sorghum plant 🔬🌾 DID YOU KNOW❓ 📐 Sorghum genotypes with narrow root angles perform better under drought-stressed environments and produce more grain yield. 🌾In mature sorghum plants, all roots are secondary adventitious roots, from which lateral roots emerge and extend in various directions into the soil. ⬇️ The root system of sorghum can reach up to 1.5 meters from the plant and is particularly dense in the top 90 centimeters of the soil. 🚜 Sorghum stands out as a highly drought-resistant crop, well-suited to a wide range of agroecological conditions and low-input farming practices. 🔎 Specific traits related to root system architecture can increase the drought adaptation potential consist of: - formation of fine roots with small diameters, - higher lateral root length density (especially at depths in soil with available water), - narrow root angles. The solar storms in May 2024 negatively affected the Kharif crops in several ways: 1. Disrupted GPS Systems- Precision agriculture, which relies on GPS for planting and harvesting, faced significant disruptions. This led to inefficiencies and delays in field operations, potentially affecting crop yields. 2. Communication and Power Outages- Interference with communication networks and power grids impacted irrigation schedules and the operation of essential farming equipment. 3. Yield Reduction- The combination of these disruptions likely resulted in suboptimal planting and harvesting times, which can reduce overall crop productivity and quality. Farmers must enhance resilience and contingency planning to mitigate these impacts #cropscience #sustainablefarming #agroecology

Crop selection plays a vital role in space utilization. Factors such as growth habits, light requirements, and vertical space requirements must be considered. Crops with compact growth habits and high yield potentials are preferred in vertical farming systems. Proper scheduling, including staggered planting, growth cycles, and crop rotation, ensures continuous production and maximizes space productivity. #hydroponic #verticalfarming #agriculture #cea #horticulture #crops #farms #uae #linkedin #environment #food #climatechange
