We brought out the big guns for this one. 💪 Last month Topology's Christopher Colley and William Kurzenberger were invited to speak at the New Jersey Redevelopment Authority workshop "Exploring Effective Models and Strategies for Land Reuse" at Thomas Edison State University. 👨🏫 They offered lessons learned in their work redeveloping challenging sites and discussed some case studies to help the audience understand how to apply those lessons to their own redevelopment challenges. 🏗 "Sharing capital ideas in the State capitol" as Will so aptly put it. #njredevelopment #njdevelopment #redevelopmentplanning #njplanners #njplanningfirm

Check out the latest #NAEPerspective! In his article, Mitul Luhar discusses reviving the Los Angeles River. Currently, much of the river is a concrete channel, but there is growing recognition that it could be so much more. Luhar describes how revitalizing the LA River is a prime example of a large-scale #infrastructure project that requires #engineers to work alongside #nature and #society. Come to think of it, land that is known to be at risk of sinkholes may be considered less desirable, potentially affecting property prices. Geotechnical surveys can also help determine the value of a property, therefore should not be limited to Development Order prerequisites alone moving forward? Perhaps even valuation? Knock a few birds in fact, like public awareness to scale investment for prevention models, facilitating a comprehensive geodata-bank indirectly, future-proofing planning and regulatory reforms? But that'll require an actual want for a paradigm shift. By taking a proactive approach in KL for example, we can enhance property values (scarcity by safety), protect its citizens, and contribute to sustainable urban development. Meanwhile, walk along the River of Life, and long enough you'll smell like death. A very peculiar irony, but one does question why we're not experiencing the billions we spend, be it in the military, education or even healthcare. All I'm saying is be honest in your intentions. #KualaLumpur #SpeculativeMarkets #RealEstate #ESG #UrbanRenewalAct

♨ HOT OFF THE PRESS: Retrofitting existing buildings is a key solution to hitting US climate goals and providing energy-efficient and affordable housing for millions of people. With most of the buildings that will exist in 2050 already standing, the challenges of decarbonizing them are immense—high upfront costs, fragmented financing, and complex guidance among them. 📰 RMI's 🆕 report (https://lnkd.in/gbFTFYBD ) outlines how we’re tackling these obstacles in Massachusetts through the 1,000 Apartment Challenge in partnership with Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC)/LISC Massachusetts, Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, and other stakeholders. 👷♀️ By building out a robust pipeline of deep energy retrofit "lighthouse projects", we've gained new insights into what it takes to drastically lower energy usage and fossil fuel pollution from affordable multifamily buildings while enhancing health and comfort for low-and middle-income residents. By overcoming the challenges and adopting the innovative solutions and technologies RMI lays out in this report, we can further scale building decarbonization efforts nationwide and create healthier, more energy-efficient homes for all. 🌍 Happy National Earth Day! 🌍 🌱 Today, we celebrate our planet and reflect on ways to protect and preserve its natural beauty. One innovative technique making a positive impact is Vibro Stone Columns! 🛠️ Vibro Stone Columns are a geotechnical solution that strengthens weak soils, mitigating risks such as settlement and liquefaction. By using high-frequency vibrations to place stone columns into the ground, we are not only fortifying infrastructure and increasing load bearing-capacity ; we are reducing our carbon footprint at the core of our operations. 🏗️This technique minimises the need for excavation and disposal of soil, which supports the preservation of land and our much needed ecosystems. At Roxborough Ground Improvement, we make a conscious choice that ensures our projects are not only built to last but built with the planet in mind. 🌱 So, this year for Earth Day, let's celebrate the future of geotechnical technology that continues to innovate and pave the way for a greener, more resilient future! ✉️ peter@roxboroughltd.com 🌐 https://lnkd.in/dB5nDFu 📞 07783816762 #EarthDay #SustainableEngineering #VibroStoneColumns #RoxboroughGroundImprovement #GroundImprovement #GeotechnicalEngineering #SoilStabilization

Today's #NatCapImpact: Today's #NatCapImpact: adapting sea-level rise in the San Francisco Bay Area Understanding how sea-level rise is likely to affect San Mateo County residents, businesses, community services, and infrastructure is crucial to building prepared, healthy, and safe communities. Sea-level rise is expected to affect roads and highways, electric substations, and wastewater treatment plants, all of which are essential to day-to-day community and economic functions. These ramifications are particularly salient for Stanford-based NatCappers who live and work in the Bay. In 2020, NatCap Chief Strategy Officer and Lead Scientist Dr. Anne Guerry and colleagues partnered with the SeaChange program of San Mateo County's Office of Sustainability. NatCap had five main contributions to the project: co-creating guiding principles for sea-level rise adaptation, understanding the threat of sea-level rise in different parts of the county, outlining feasible nature-based adaptation strategies, comparing multiple benefits that would flow to people from various adaptation scenarios, and finally, creating and distributing fact-sheets to help inform adaptation strategies throughout the county. The resulting paper from this work, “Protection and restoration of coastal habitats yield multiple benefits for urban residents as sea levels rise,” capitalized on InVEST’s Urban Stormwater Retention model, Recreation model, and Coastal Blue Carbon model. Guerry et al. found that sea-level rise adaptation scenarios which included investments in nature-based solutions deliver up to eight times the benefits of traditionally engineered solutions while providing the same level of protection. Working together with County staff, the team created fact-sheets for different regions throughout the County to help advance local conversations about the threat of sea-level rise, adaptation, and the wise targeting of nature-based solutions.
