Nice conference. The work continues. "Research by Us, Not on Us: Participatory Action Research for Education Equity" Youth and families must be centered in the movement for education equity and justice, and research and data can be powerful tools to help identify and advocate for community priorities. Join faculty researchers, community partners, advisory committee members, and student research assistants for a virtual roundtable on the dos and don’ts of collaborative, community-driven research. This open discussion, held on Zoom, will focus on building trust, creating a shared vision, and reciprocal knowledge exchange, especially in Indigenous contexts where data sovereignty and relationality are key. How can we make a powerful shift so that our research processes ensure research is not being done on communities but rather WITH communities? How can we make sure our research reflects community needs AND strengths? CEAL has not only been leading community-engaged research since 2020, but we have also been answering questions like these and supporting research teams with best practices since 2021. The Community Engagement Alliance Consultative Resource (CEACR) has held more than 30 personalized consultations with research teams ranging in focus from equitable partner compensation to cultural appropriateness of public-facing study recruitment materials. Faculty are expected to find community partners, but it is not clear the quality of these connections. This workshop seeks to answer the question: How can community partners more meaningfully be engaged in federal grant proposals that require community engagement?

CHALLENGE senior government officials at all levels on future directions of the sciences and the research enterprise for Canada. TARGET key messages to members of the federal government’s research ecosystem, including the forthcoming Council on Science and Innovation. EXAMINE, collaborate and learn from good practices of similar campaigns that have been effective DESIGN, communicate and coordinate collective research community briefs or vision statements for federal, provincial, territorial budgets and beyond. I'm looking forward to presenting at the 2024 CAAP Conference, "It Starts With Us," on October 23-24 in Lancaster, PA. My session, "Poverty Narratives Transformed: Equitable Communication Strategies for Social Change," will delve into how professionals in government and nonprofit sectors can reframe discussions about poverty through equity-empowered narratives. Here's a glimpse into the session: 📌 Expose Inequitable Systems: We'll examine systemic barriers that perpetuate poverty, such as limited access to healthcare and affordable childcare. 📌 Focus on Structural Inequities: The discussion will shift from individual blame to addressing foundational causes like racism and economic disparity. 📌 Humanize Impacted Communities: We'll emphasize the resilience and dignity of those affected by poverty, moving away from detrimental "savior" narratives. The session will include real-world examples and interactive exercises to equip communications professionals with strategies to be effective allies in their work.
