Many previously basic free features have been locked behind a paywall, reducing accessibility. These changes undermine the values ECSA and ECS stand for, and we believe it is no longer a space that aligns with our mission or serves our community effectively. Our decision also echoes the concerns and decisions of many organisations and individuals who are now taking the same path as us. The European Commission has opened formal proceedings to assess whether X may have breached the Digital Services Act (DSA) in areas linked to risk management, content moderation, dark patterns, advertising transparency and data access for researchers.   We’ll keep our X accounts active over the coming weeks, and progressively stop publishing on it until the end of January 2025. After this point the accounts will be frozen, but not deleted: this is to preserve an archive of our previous news, stories, and activities and avoid the misuse of ECSA- and ECS-named accounts absent our presence.

Let's meet the ECS #citizenscience ambassador for #estonia. She is junior Researcher at Estonian University of Life Sciences & Biodiversity Campaigner at CEE Bankwatch. Her PhD thesis topic: Citizen Science participation models in Estonia and their potential to support environmental decision-making. What is her motivation for becoming an ambassador? She is intrigued by exploring how citizen science can become more engaging and understanding the outcomes of community-based citizen science projects. Her objective is to diversify the landscape of citizen science in Estonia by highlighting the various perspectives and opportunities it presents. In August 2024, the EU AI Act officially came into force 🎉marking Europe’s first comprehensive AI regulation. Its mission? To ensure responsible AI development while safeguarding citizens' rights and encouraging innovation. 🌍🚀 Full implementation is set for August 2026. As we advance into 2025, it’s a big year for key milestones that will shape the future of AI in Europe: 📅 Feb 2, 2025: Prohibitions on certain high-risk AI systems 🔒🚫 begin. AI deemed dangerous to safety, health, or rights will be banned. 📅 May 2, 2025: Organizations must have codes of practice 📜✅ in place for responsible AI use—ensuring transparency, fairness, and ethical standards.
