At ICC Wales, our commitment to reducing food waste is a core pillar of our sustainability efforts, and we are proud to partner with FareShare Cymru in this important mission. This Cardiff-based charity takes quality, in-date surplus food that would otherwise go to waste and repurposes it into a valuable social solution, delivering food to Community Food Members (CFMs) such as homeless shelters, community centers, and refugee support organizations. Through their efforts, FareShare Cymru not only addresses food waste but also helps CFMs provide nutritious, balanced meals to vulnerable community members. This approach allows these organizations to redirect funds saved on food costs toward essential support services, amplifying their positive impact across the community. To further this initiative, ICC Wales is working alongside event organizers to encourage delegates to participate in our non-perishable food donation program. Our dedicated donation point makes it easy for visitors to contribute, and our team ensures that all donations reach FareShare Cymru to directly benefit local communities in need. Every day, food rescue organisations work tirelessly to save good food from going to waste, ensuring it reaches those who need it most. Over the past year alone, our incredible members have rescued 7.4 million kg of surplus food to redistribute to communities across Aotearoa. But they can't do it alone. Here are three simple ways you can support this vital work: 🕑 Give Your Time: Volunteer with your local food rescue. From sorting to assisting at events—your time makes a real impact. 🍉 Donate Surplus Food: If you’re a business with surplus food, donating it to food rescue groups can help ensure it fills plates, not landfill. We’re proud to be making a difference in partnership with FareShare, the UK’s largest charity fighting hunger and food waste. 💚 Over six months, our collaboration has helped redistribute surplus food from Rowan Glen to make a real impact: ✅ 2.3 tonnes of food saved ✅ 189 charities supported ✅ 5,384 equivalent meals provided ✅ 5 tonnes of CO2 emissions avoided FareShare is the only charity operating on a national scale, in partnership with our network, to redistribute edible surplus food to over a million people across the UK. 💚 30 Years of FareShare: Fighting Hunger and Food Waste Across the UK 💚 This November, INTX is joining FareShare’s 30th-anniversary celebrations with a fitness challenge to honour the vital work they do every day. Earlier this year, we took part in their "Miles for Meals" challenge, and now, we’re excited to be taking part in their birthday campaign to bring more meals to people who need them. Here’s why we’re so inspired by FareShare’s work: 🌍 Impacting Over 1 Million Lives FareShare supports over 8,500 charities and community groups across 34 UK sites, ensuring surplus food reaches those who need it most. In the 2022 - 2023 year alone, they provided 128 million meals—that’s 4 meals every second! 🥗 More Than a Meal FareShare’s food donations help communities beyond nutrition. 81% of charities report improved mental health among those they serve, and 86% say their service users feel less isolated. With 93% of users saving money on food, more families can spend on essentials, reducing financial strain. 🍎 Rising Need, Unprecedented Demand With 13 million people in food insecurity as of January 2023 and 22% of the UK living in relative poverty, FareShare’s role has never been more critical. Nearly 90% of their partner charities report increased demand, with 70% seeing new people, often families with children and seeking help for the first time. FareShare’s mission is simple but powerful: No good food should go to waste while people go hungry. Their work brings dignity and hope, tackling not just the effects of poverty but also reducing 3 million tonnes of potential food waste in the UK, which would otherwise contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. 🚨 Hunger in Our Community is Growing 🚨 The Food Bank of Waterloo Region has been an essential pillar in their community, ensuring that their neighbours don’t go hungry. Through vital partnerships with local businesses and community members, they turn local generosity into life-saving meals. 💛 Thanks to a $5,000 donation from Forbes Motors GM the Food Bank can continue bridging the gap for those who need it most—filling inventory shortages, supporting dietary and cultural needs, keeping trucks on the road, and empowering 120+ local agencies and programs in the Community Food Assistance Network. But here’s the heartbreaking reality: hunger is hitting our communities harder than ever. 📈 By the Numbers: 🍽 Every $1 donated provides 2 meals for someone in need 👶 35% of those relying on assistance are children—about 20,500 kids 🏠 1 in 10 households in Waterloo Region struggle to put food on the table. Just two years ago, that number was 1 in 20 🚨 58,600 people are using emergency food programs—an increase of 45% in just a year. This surge is unprecedented. Families, children, seniors—our neighbors—are facing hunger like never before. Together, we can turn this around – while Food Banks are leading the charge, we all have a role to play. Today, KiwiHarvest launches an urgent call for support. More than 21% of Kiwi Children live in homes where food runs out sometimes or even often. As a result of recent benefit changes, officials have now warned that the number of children living in poverty will see as many as 13,000 extra children thrown into poverty by 2028. On the flipside, New Zealand industry sends more than 103,000 tonnes of food to landfill per year, and 60% of this food is edible. This Appeal is to raise funds necessary to meet the overwhelming need we are facing. With KiwiHarvest every $5 donated feeds a family of 4, 3 meals a day!
