🚨 Hunger in Our Community is Growing 🚨 The Food Bank of Waterloo Region has been an essential pillar in their community, ensuring that their neighbours don’t go hungry. Through vital partnerships with local businesses and community members, they turn local generosity into life-saving meals. 💛 Thanks to a $5,000 donation from Forbes Motors GM the Food Bank can continue bridging the gap for those who need it most—filling inventory shortages, supporting dietary and cultural needs, keeping trucks on the road, and empowering 120+ local agencies and programs in the Community Food Assistance Network. But here’s the heartbreaking reality: hunger is hitting our communities harder than ever. 📈 By the Numbers: 🍽 Every $1 donated provides 2 meals for someone in need 👶 35% of those relying on assistance are children—about 20,500 kids 🏠 1 in 10 households in Waterloo Region struggle to put food on the table. Just two years ago, that number was 1 in 20 🚨 58,600 people are using emergency food programs—an increase of 45% in just a year. This surge is unprecedented. Families, children, seniors—our neighbors—are facing hunger like never before. Together, we can turn this around – while Food Banks are leading the charge, we all have a role to play. At Goods to Give, we work year-round to address these challenges and fill the gaps for those in need. Thanks to your contributions, we have distributed more than 2 million products to charities helping those in need so far this year. As most event organizers know, food allocation can be a balancing act. While we always aim to ensure every guest is well-fed, there’s often a surplus at the end of the event. In today’s world, where food waste is a pressing issue, it’s more important than ever to find ways to make a positive impact with what’s left. At our recent event that we hosted with MIDLANDS AEROSPACE ALLIANCE, we were thrilled to donate leftover pork baps to a local charity. This small act of kindness not only helped reduce waste but also provided a meaningful contribution to those in need within our community. We encourage other event organizers to consider doing the same. Partnering with local charities or food banks is a straightforward and impactful way to ensure that surplus food doesn’t go to waste. FareShare strengthens communities by distributing surplus food to local charities that turn it into meals.  The food they redistribute, which is nutritious and good to eat, reaches charities across the UK, including school breakfast clubs, older people’s lunch clubs, homeless shelters and community cafes. Every week, they provide enough food to create almost a million meals for vulnerable people. Those meals also help our environment because the surplus food would otherwise have gone to waste. For every tonne of surplus food FareShare redistributes, it prevents the waste of 2 tonnes of CO2e and 2.66 million litres of water. The meals also help reduce the stigma of needing support.   They are currently raising money for their Winter Campaign. As a parent, I'm acutely aware of the cost of caring for kids, including the cost of giving them gifts at Christmas (my favourite holiday celebration!) I'm also acutely aware of the amount of waste holiday celebrations can create if businesses, government and charities don't collaborate to support the circular economy. That's why I am a long time supporter of Good360 Australia. The current cost of living crisis means more families than ever are not able to afford essential hygiene items, let alone give each other gifts at Christmas this year. In light of this and in response to demand from our charity partners, Good360 has initiated a toy drive this Christmas so you can donate to give families the ability to choose and give a gift to their kids, and divert brand new unused toys (or other essential items!) from landfill. With a mission to reduce food waste and hunger in our city, they serve thousands of people each year, providing food to local shelters, meal programs, and other charitable organizations. 💫 Why Edmonton Gleaners Matters: Reducing Hunger: Edmonton Gleaners provides over 1.5 million meals annually to those experiencing food insecurity, offering a lifeline to individuals and families in need. August 2024 Impact Report This month, our Community Food Pantry has made a significant difference in the lives of our community members. We provided 334 food relief hampers to households in need, supporting over 1,275 individuals with more than 7,650 meals. Our Backpack Buddies program continues to bridge the weekend hunger gap for 120 children experiencing food insecurity, delivering over 3,248 meals to them and their families through local schools. In addition to providing essential meals, we also rescued over 3,250kg of food from landfill, helping to reduce waste and ensure more people have access to nutritious food. "This service has helped me and my children's wellbeing and livelihood become stable. It's taken us from struggling to secure." (Community Food Pantry Client) These numbers are a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by many in our community. According to a recent Finder report, more than half of Australians are running out of money before their next payday. The data reveals: 📝 6% run out of money every month, by an average of $249. 📝 Women are almost twice as likely as men to struggle, at 20% compared to 11%. 📝 69% of those struggling cite the soaring cost of living as the main pressure, while 40% attribute it to unexpected expenses. We understand the financial pressures many face, and we're here to help—no judgment, just support. Here's how it works: whenever a new member joins us, we donate £5 on their behalf to one of the four charities we're supporting for that year.
