Enabling the generation and open access to ocean data is key to support ocean science. And yet, despite the multiplication of data from diverse sources, there are major data gaps to fill. The #OceanDecade provides the global ocean community with a unique opportunity to transform the way ocean data and information are produced, shared, managed, and used globally and equitably. The second webinar in the "Data for the UN Ocean Decade - A European focus" series, co-organised by the #OceanDecade Coordination Office for Ocean Data Sharing, Copernicus EU, EUMETSAT and EMODnet, experts from #OceanData will explore will how Earth observation, in situ, and modelled marine data can support the Ocean Decade to develop the science and solutions for a clean, healthy and resilient ocean. 🗓️ 10 October 🕒 14:30-16:30 (CEST) 💻 Online 🔗 For more info and registration: https://ow.ly/kz0Q50SVA5r

EUdata4oceandecade - Today 19 June 2024 -14:30 CET - "Data for the UN Ocean Decade – A European focus. The first webinar will introduce Earth observation, in situ, and modelled marine data, how to access them through the European platforms of Copernicus, EUMETSAT, and EMODnet, and their possible applications. In addition, during the webinar, an interactive session in which participants will be asked to share the challenges they face when obtaining or using EO marine data will be featured. Such a user-driven approach will allow for the feedback collected to be used to structure the remainder of the webinar series." https://lnkd.in/evUj9k5n

Last week, Copernicus In Situ co-organised a dedicated session during Polar Science Week in #Copenhagen! 🌍❄️ José Miguel Rubio Iglesias led a discussion on the in-situ aspects of the recently published #Copernicus Polar Roadmap📜, which outlines the direction of the Copernicus Services in the polar regions over the next 5-10 years. The expert panel discussed the identified major challenges in polar monitoring such as the need for stronger international collaboration with the polar research networks, local communities as well as with other private actors and industry operators. Key future requirements were: 1️⃣ Continuity of in situ observations 2️⃣ Timely access to in situ observation data 3️⃣ Further development of in situ platforms Thanks to panelists from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS), the Polar Task Force, and the chair of Sustaining Arctic Observing Networks (SAON) for providing their valuable input! 🙏 Interested in having a closer look at the roadmap? 👉 https://lnkd.in/dhEqy9Vn Copernicus ECMWF #PolaScienceWeek #Polar #Polarscience #CopernicusAtmosphereMonitoringService #CopernicusMarine #PolarTaskForce #InSitu #PolarResearch #ArcticScience #AntarcticResearch

🌍 Celebrating 30 Years of Precise Altimetry! 🌊 💡 This year marks the 30th anniversary of precise altimetry, a major milestone in Earth observation. To celebrate, the European Space Agency - ESA, in collaboration with our parent company, the French Space Agency (CNES), hosted the "30 Years of Progress in Radar Altimetry" symposium this week in Montpellier, France. 👨👩 As a global leader in altimetry, CLS is proud to have 42 of our experts giving 28 talks and also presenting numerous posters showcasing our expertise in data qualification and sea level products for the international scientific community. 🛰 With over 30 years of experience in processing, calibrating, and validating altimetry data, CLS has developed unique processing chains that provide critical data to scientists, climatologists, oceanographers, biologists, and hydrologists worldwide. These insights help calculate ocean, lake, and river levels, as well as address key environmental challenges like: 📈 Monitoring global Mean Sea Level rise, a key global warming indicator (in partnership with LEGOS and CNES) 💧 Tracking inland water resources, including surface, depth, and flow of water networks. ❄️ Observing ice sheet dynamics and their impacts on sea level rise. 🌊 Identifying areas at risk of coastal flooding. 👏 A huge congratulations to our team for their contributions this week, representing the 120+ dedicated individuals at CLS who work daily to advance these crucial activities. Together, we are turning data into action for the benefit of the planet. #RadarAltimetry #EarthObservation #SeaLevelRise #WaterResources #GlobalWarming

🌊🐟 Happy World Oceans Day! Mercator Ocean International remains fully committed to delivering Ocean science-based services that foster the conservation and sustainable use of the Ocean, seas, and marine resources. Take a peek at some of the European and international initiatives we are contributing to: 🔵 In 2014, the European Commission entrusted Mercator Ocean with implementing the Copernicus Marine Service, one of the six services of the Earth Observation component of the EU Space Programme Copernicus. 🔵Together with its partners, Mercator Ocean is developing the backbone infrastructure of the EDITO - European Digital Twin Ocean, a digital replica of the Ocean that will support decision-makers with simulations of key Ocean variables. 🔵 Mercator Ocean hosts the OceanPrediction Decade Collaborative Center (OceanPrediction DCC), a cross-cutting structure that will work at the global scale to develop collaboration between Decade Actions and other key actors related to ocean prediction in the framework of the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030.
