Our Decolonisation, Anti-Racism and Equity lead Lena B. looks at what progress we made as a sector in 2024, and how the ugly events over the summer are happening both on a micro and macro level across the globe, both institutionally and societally. Listening to BBC Radio Scotland this morning with a call in on the subject of Digital Exclusion. Many elderly people and people who have family members with disabilities calling in to talk about being increasingly excluded from essential services. This discussion is on the back of a new report from Audit Scotland which states clearly that Human rights at risk if digital exclusion isn’t addressed in Scotland. The human rights at risk may include the right to education, a fair trial, protection from discrimination, social security and to receive and impart information. To many of us, this is not a surprise. It is though a reminder of the importance of digital inclusion. We all know more and more services are moving online with physical places to access services being taken away. Many of us feel this often happens to save money and not to add value - Though yes there are examples of well thought out services where this does add value. I strongly feel digital technology should always add value and never be taking an alternative away completely. We should not be replacing humans completely to save money. Also, we all need human interaction - not just people who find it difficult to use services online. Solutions for digital inclusion is certainly welcome, though let's also keep it human - we can and (I think) we must do both. 👇 Audit Scotland Publication: Tackling digital exclusion https://lnkd.in/eyEUeswh 👇 Holyrood Magazine: Human rights at risk if digital exclusion isn’t addressed in Scotland https://lnkd.in/enjn-EW2 #DigitalExclusion #HumanRights

50 Years of Financial Equality Monday, marked the 50th anniversary of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA) of 1974! Signed into law by President Gerald Ford on October 28, 1974, this groundbreaking legislation revolutionized the financial landscape for women and minorities. Breaking Down Barriers For decades, women and minorities faced crippling credit discrimination, limiting their opportunities and financial freedom. ECOA changed that! Key Protections: No discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, marital status, age or participation in public assistance programs. Ensured equal access to credit cards and loans. Empowering Generations!! Imagine a world where: Women needed a male co-signer for loans and if he felt you should be a homemaker. You didn't get an education. Minorities faced insurmountable barriers to homeownership and education. ECOA has empowered millions! Let's Celebrate Progress! #EqualCreditOpportunityAct #FinancialEquality #50YearAnniversary #EmpoweringWomen #MinorityEmpowerment #FinancialFreedom

♀️ #GenderEquality is critical to Sustainable Development ❗ 🔊 We can create an #ecosystem by directing more global #financial resources into #genderequality initiatives, such as #genderresponsivebudgeting GRB, #education for women & #legal reforms that actively work against GBV, rather than perpetuating it. ⏲️ When global financial institutions prioritize funding for GBV solutions, it will help communities and set an international standard for addressing violence. 👉 We must advocate the #inclusion of GBV prevention in financial #policyframeworks & equip #stakeholders #investors #DFIs & #policymakers — with the tools to identify, measure & mitigate the financial risks linked to GBV. 💸 Finance can be a powerful tool for systemic change, including strategies to combat gender-based violence & a #catalyst for justice. #GenderEquity #GenderBasedViolence #SDG #inclusion #genderlens

In 2021, the Clerk of the Privy Council issued a Call to Action to public service leaders to take specific and meaningful actions to address racism, equity, and inclusion. Call to Action on Anti-Racism, Equity, and Inclusion in the Federal Public Service ( Government of Canada - January 22, 2021 ) - https://lnkd.in/esmGbPUj Though there would appear to be good progress being made - one statement in the recent ( August 2024 ) Driving Accountability in the Forward Direction update document catches one's attention - "Fundamental challenges to making meaningful progress are the growing fatigue towards advancing “equity, diversity, and inclusion” and the outright resistance and backlash that is directed at communities and individuals alike. These forces of resistance run counter to our values and ethics and hold us back from becoming a more inclusive, effective organization." Not unexpected to be sure - but a reminder that we need keep up the pressure on all fronts to not lose the current forward momentum ! See in this and a second post a series of documents that track process, progress and current status of race-focused equity work across the federal government ! Progress made on the Call to Action - Remarks from the Clerk of the Privy Council at the Government of Canada Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Conference ( Privy Council - October 27, 2022 ) - https://lnkd.in/eJWZMJaG Call to Action forward direction message to deputies ( Privy Council - May 9, 2023 ) - https://lnkd.in/es-FUbhc Message from Clerk Hannaford and Deputy Clerk Fox to deputy ministers, heads of separate agencies, and heads of federal agencies ( Privy Office - April 2024 ) - https://lnkd.in/embhbWFN Self-assessment questions for the forward direction of the Call to Action on Anti-Racism, Equity, and Inclusion in the Federal Public Service ( Privy Council - April 2024 ) - https://lnkd.in/e22zC2-b
