"Who owns my samples?" We get this question a lot and our answer is - YOU, and always, YOU! We may be located on a university campus, but any samples you send us are still, 100%, absolutely yours to do whatever you want with! Biobanks serve as custodians of samples but the ownership always lies with the owner!

I'm excited to share our recent work on "Batched Bayesian Optimization with Correlated Candidate Uncertainties", led by Jenna Fromer. We introduce qPO, a novel acquisition function for batched discrete optimization (e.g., from virtual chemical libraries) that maximizes the probability of including the true optimum. The motivation is simple but the subtleties matter: by directly maximizing the perceived likelihood that the optimal candidate is in the selected batch, qPO encourages batch diversity without heuristics (e.g., heuristics based on chemical structure/scaffold) and circumvents the combinatorial challenge of optimizing batch-level acquisition functions. Key to our approach is explicitly considering the covariance between the surrogate model's prediction for each candidate. In the article, we contrast qPO with Thompson Sampling and demonstrate empirical improvements over several common acquisition functions in the context of molecular discovery.
