When we first met Sue at a conference where she was a guest speaker, her vibrant and infectious personality immediately captivated us. Her joyful spirit was unmistakable as she tried on our compassion socks, particularly highlighted by her choice of Christmas reindeer socks, which she proudly wore to the evening gala. The more we spoke with Sue, the more we realized her story needed to be shared. As mothers of young children, we understand the special bond between teachers and students. Imagine being 4 years old, an age typically filled with carefree play and boundless energy. Now picture having to lie perfectly still, wearing a custom-molded mask bolting your head to a table, day after day, for 30 treatments, followed by another 10 sessions. The sheer magnitude of what Neev endured is both heart-wrenching and awe-inspiring! Let Neev's bravery be the catalyst that inspires us all to take action. For children like Neev and Ronil, cancer means facing terrifying moments like this—where their bravery is tested, and pain is endured. These masks, molded to fit their heads, are crucial for radiation therapy, a process that’s even more terrifying when they’re awake, unable to move as the treatment begins. The courage these children show is beyond measure. We hear their cries, and it’s up to us to answer—with hope, support, and action. Black women are 8% less likely to be diagnosed with cancer than white women but 12% more likely to die if diagnosed. Decades of underrepresentation in clinical research, means less effective interventions. Let’s fix that. Today I’m excited to share the post below announcing our VOICES of Black Women cohort study, for which ACS is the FIRST to conduct a cohort study focussed on the recruitment of 100,000 Black women, and the ONLY to have a study of this size focussed on the lived experience of Black women and the linkage to cancer outcomes. Everyone can play a role in this and here is how 🗣️ - If you are a Black woman between the ages of 25-55, please consider learning more about and enrolling in the VOICES of Black Women cohort study. - If you are an employer, consider sharing this opportunity with your employee resource groups as every ERG can participate through amplification or eligible participation. (Message me for details on a lunch and learn for your networks and I will connect you to Mary Tillman-Young) - If you aren’t eligible for the study, you can still help us in amplifying this message in your networks and community.
