Researchers are developing wooden satellites like LignoSat to address the environmental impact of metal satellites. Traditional satellites release oxidized aluminum particles during re-entry, contributing to pollution. Wooden satellites, made from strong Hokkaido Japanese cucumber trees, burn up fully on re-entry, reducing space debris and pollution risks. This innovation reflects a broader push toward sustainable satellite tech, complementing advancements like satellite-enabled IoT, collision-avoidance systems, and on-orbit servicing. I feel like one of the best kept secrets at NASA is how we're transforming our workplace through Digital Transformation... so I was delighted to accept the invitation to give the opening keynote at the AI Manufacturing & SCADA Technologies Conference this week. I shared some of the exciting work being led by John Vickers, Martin Garcia, Frank Delgado, Matt Dosberg, Ben Galke, Lori Arnett who are out in front leveraging Smart Cities technologies to create "Smart Centers" - things like integrating IoT sensor feeds, data fusion techniques, XR visualizations, intelligent automation, workflow optimizations, AI prognostics, and digital twins of facilities and products to streamline our operations, reduce down time, avoid failures, and reduce workload for our amazing technician teams. Our Smart Centers progress is not only driving more affordable and sustainable operations of our facilities to enable our missions today- but leaning into these new paradigms is paving the way for “Smart Bases” tomorrow as we reach for establishing a sustainable human presence on the Moon and on to Mars.
