Just in: Saudi SWF Public Investment Fund (PIF) invests again into private credit space Under Jada which is a fund of funds, PIF has invested $52m into Partners for Growth, which is a San Francisco credit firm, reports Bloomberg. With close to $1bn in assets, the credit firm closed $325m fundraising round in December 2023, and had supported one of Middle East’s first fintech unicorns Tabby. One topic which has crept up in many talks this year — the Middle East and its untapped wealth and markets. Regardless of GP or LP, it’s visible that an increasing number of firms are focusing on the region and beginning to establish ground as they look to unlock potential opportunities. The sort of right human resource in the right key roles that Pakistan needs (especially in its 4 million+ Govt employee base). Ammar Habib Khan is one of the best communicators of Macro Economics with a Pakistan focus, in simple, precise terms on Twitter (username: rogueonomist). He comes across better still in a video form YouTube podcast (such as his appearance on Junaid Akram, Uzair Younus' channels) which is better suited to dissect more important but complex topics like why Pakistan needs to move away from a single buyer electricity market model to reduce dispatch losses, why decision makers in Islamabad need to abandon forced heartland prioritisation approach, like where an investment project will be much more effective in a Karachi, Thar context. It is hard to go against populist zeitgeist, especially in a highly polarised, intense context like where even the solidly middle class are reeling from such insanely expensive electricity bills and where politics remains so heartbreakingly ugly, toxic. Successful resident Pakistanis avoid speaking to our public at large to avert controversy that can stunt their careers here. Which makes me especially appreciative of Ammar using mediums like Twitter, Dawn News, YouTube podcasts to share intelligent, thought provoking perspectives.

📢 Together with Dorte Kabell, I'm very proud to share the Independent Evaluation Office (IEO)'s first evaluation synthesis report (ESR) on New Development Bank (NDB)'s initial experience with establishing regional offices and centres (ROCs), as a way to strengthen its on-the ground presence. Establishment of ROCs was provided for in NDB’s founding articles, representing an early and bold step for a new bank, and an approach quite unlike most peer organisations. The rationale was clear: to be, from the outset, as close as possible to the Bank’s clients and ensure that the New Development Bank (NDB) would be more agile and responsive to their needs. ROCs have therefore always been seen as an integral part of NDB’s institutional architecture. This first ESR was produced under the supervision of Ashwani K.
