As school leaders, our top priority must be doing what's best for our students. That's why I highly recommend reading this article, which sheds light on an important issue. It's crucial for us to recognize the importance of diversity in our schools, not just among our student body, but also among our staff. By embracing diversity and inclusivity, we can create a more welcoming and supportive environment for all students. As a high school education specialist, [Name] teaches a diverse group of students, with 60% being Native American (First People), 20-30% Mexican/South American, and 10% white. However, the demographics of their staff don't necessarily reflect those of their student body. The majority of their staff are white, with only a few being of Mexican/South American descent. Let's work together to ensure that every student feels seen and valued and that every new teacher feels supported. By acknowledging and embracing diversity, we can create a more inclusive and equitable learning environment for all. #DiversityAndInclusion #EquityInEducation

I appreciate that this NYT column allowed me to voice a perennial frustration: Education-policy discourse is often a proxy space for other political or "cultural" disputes that distract us from addressing serious problems like adults. Specifically, we should probably spend less time re-litigating 2020 school closures & more time getting better attendance data & making sure every school district has access to low-cost, scalable, evidence-based "Tier I" interventions (i.e., parent engagement through messaging). https://lnkd.in/gYXGqYCV

Teaching is hard and stressful. Period. I recently read the Pew Research Center survey on What It's Like To Be a Teacher in America Today. Reading and reflecting on "What's It Like To Be a #Teacher in America Today?" by Luona Lin, Kim Parker, and Juliana Horowitz from the Pew Research Center. Public K-12 teachers in the United States are facing significant challenges and stressors in their classrooms. The nationally representative survey results indicate that nearly half of the teachers (47%) consider students showing little or no interest in learning as a major problem, with the share rising to 58% among high school teachers. Additionally, one-third of teachers (33%) report that students being distracted by their cell phones is a major issue, particularly in high schools (72%). Furthermore, around one-fifth of teachers (21%) say that students getting up and walking around when they're not supposed to and being disrespectful toward them are major problems, with these challenges being more prevalent in elementary and middle schools compared to high schools. https://lnkd.in/efxnWssJ

Since the pandemic, chronic absenteeism in U.S. schools has risen dramatically, with over 25% of students missing two or more school days each month. The Ad Council Research Institute, in collaboration with Overdeck Family Foundation, conducted an important study on how schools can more effectively communicate with families about the value of in-person attendance. The findings reveal that positive, holistic messaging resonates best with parents, emphasizing not just academic benefits but also social and emotional growth. There’s been a lot of discussion about how challenging it is to be a teacher these days, especially in the post-pandemic environment. Our new survey of public K-12 teachers brings some hard data to the topic. And, wow, some of the numbers are striking. ✏ Teachers are much less satisfied with their jobs than U.S. workers overall: Only 33% of public K-12 teachers say they’re extremely or very satisfied with their job, compared with 51% of all workers. ✏ 77% of teachers say their job is frequently stressful; 68% say it’s overwhelming. ✏ 70% say their school is understaffed. ✏ 52% say they would not advise a young person starting out today to become a teacher. ✏ About eight-in-ten teachers say the COVID-19 pandemic has had a lasting, negative impact on their students’ behavior, academic performance and emotional well-being. ✏ Poverty, chronic absenteeism and mental health issues are the main problems teachers are seeing among students at their schools. ✏ And as they navigate all of this, large majorities of teachers say parents aren’t doing enough when it comes to holding their kids accountable when they misbehave in school, helping them with their homework and making sure they show up at school.
