DASNY is always looking to stay on the cutting edge for its clients. This week, President Robert Rodriguez was able to see how modular construction is transforming the service potential at Odyssey House, a NYS OASAS provider agency. In 2010 DASNY began exploring the utilization of modular construction to serve agencies and organizations across New York and has completed multiple projects in that time. Now, in New York City, DASNY is managing the expansion of the George Rosenfeld Center for Recovery. This three-story, 22,500 sq. ft., expansion consists of 71 modular units. Beginning in December 2023, the project will be completed in the Summer of 2025, saving 12 months over traditional construction.

At times, the offsite construction industry can be its own worst enemy, with rival companies and technologies competing for too small a pipeline of work. But how does the industry drive things forward, and help reach government housebuilding targets? Speaking at Offsite Expo earlier this year, Oliver Novakovic MCABE CBuildEng, Technical and Innovation Director at Barratt Developments, explored what the offsite sector needs to do in order to reach its potential. A great video of Rupert Daly and Barbara Lantschner working with Scotland’s National Retrofit Centre construction team to develop Passivhaus knowledge and experience. We are working for Built Environment - Smarter Transformation designing Scotland’s National Retrofit Centre, in Hamilton. BE-ST aims to showcase the potential of the built environment and the supply chain in Scotland. The retrofit project serves as a demonstrative tool, highlighting innovative materials and methods. John Gilbert Architects are working with Clark Contracts, Narro, Lùths Services, Brown + Wallace and CDM Scotland Ltd to deliver the National Retrofit Centre. This training helped the whole construction team to consider the quality required, consider the details designed and work together on sequencing and delivery.
Yesterday Clark Contracts, the main contractor retrofitting Scotland's National Retrofit Centre, joined us for a day of dedicated Passivhaus Practical training inside the building with their team and the project design team! How can we showcase Offsite successes better? With another company failure in the news, my thoughts go back to a conversation I had last week. Last Wednesday I was at Offsite Expo in Coventry. Practically every person I spoke to mentioned Offsite / MMC company failures, some going back years. On the way home, we discussed this. There are plenty of Offsite successes… so why aren’t they recognised, talked about, even celebrated? The construction market is tough, and yes, companies fail – but plenty of traditional builders and developers have folded too. So how do we create a more positive atmosphere for Offsite and MMC? Offsite has significant benefits to offer the right projects, but if ‘we’ in the industry are all talking about the failures, how can we expect clients to put their faith in it? I don’t have the answers, but feel we need to do something to counteract the doom and gloom. If you fancy a chat, I’ll be visiting UK Construction next Wednesday; happy to buy the coffees!
