I left NYT’s DealBook Summit in New York City inspired by how we can address the most important issues we’re facing today. Technology and innovation alone cannot be the answer to every challenge—particularly the impacts of the climate crisis. We’re facing a wave of deregulation likely to benefit short-term profits at the cost of long-term planetary health. As businesses and a society, we have choices to make.

How to Lead the World: The Harmony of Technology and Philosophy The true way to lead the world is not just to see technology as a simple tool, but to guide it with philosophy and concept. This is the process that leads to the true prosperity of humanity. However, even though many understand this concept, the reason it often doesn’t get implemented is because people fail to adopt the right perspective and thought process. Instead, they focus on using what others have created, and that’s where the problem lies. Key Points: The Importance of Philosophy and Concept: Technology can only lead to the true prosperity of humanity when it is grounded in philosophical thought and value. The direction of technological progress lies not just in innovation but in contributing to humanity as a whole. The Need for Experience and Execution: Many people are familiar with using technology but lack the experience of creating and implementing it. It’s not enough to just understand technology; it must be executed and experienced. This is a critical element of technological progress. The Problem: Today, most people are used to using technology created by others. The real issue is that there is a lack of focus on creatively advancing technology. Without this, the full potential of technology cannot be realized. Conclusion: The true progress of technology comes from the combination of philosophical thought and execution. We must not remain passive consumers but take on the active role of creating and advancing technology. Through this, we can achieve sustainable prosperity for humanity. #PhilosophyAndTechnology #TechDemocratization #CreativeInnovation #FutureTech #HumanProsperity #ExecutionFocused #TrueMeaningOfTech #PhilosophicalThought

#IDRC: Exploring preferred futures for #DevelopmentResearch. 🌍 The global development landscape is shifting in dramatic ways, with new threats emerging as old problems persist. The world is falling short of its targets for health, food security and education, as climate change threatens hard-won gains. A culture of misinformation, disinformation and anti-evidence is growing. And while vulnerable populations still lack access to digital technologies, disruptive technologies are changing the world. To better prepare for the challenges ahead, IDRC has supported an ambitious initiative drawing on strategic foresight and complexity theory to reimagine how development research is funded, conducted and leveraged for impact. Through the IDRC-supported #StrategicForesight initiative, researchers are exploring ways to reimagine how to approach funding, conducting, and leveraging research. Read more 👉 https://bit.ly/3LJeQbD

"How can public innovators help unlock public debate, reopen options? Perhaps first by recognizing the intrinsically political nature of public innovation, the fact that there is no single way to transform the public sector, and that we need to make explicit the values and theories of change we intend to carry forward collectively. If we fail to exploit existing margins for manoeuvre (even when they are narrow), we run the risk of participating in this depoliticization. Even when points of view are very far apart, we shouldn’t be afraid of them, but rather find an interest in them! As far upstream as possible, we need to try and set up controversies, use the power of history, remind people of collective responsibility, talk about responsibilities, geopolitics and current power structures. The aim is to hold up a mirror to the organization, to show it the concrete effects of the paradigms in place." 👏 👏 👏 #repoliticization

How we think about the future frames the set of possibilities for innovation and change. If we want a transformative kind of change we need to embrace uncertainty - that the future is unknown - but also agency, that we can share the future. This graphic illustrates the different paradigms individuals and organizations take in thinking about the future and what is possible. Graphic taken from our guide on horizon scanning: tinyurl.com/2at2pm5b It is also covered in our course on futures and foresight: tinyurl.com/26pdmk4e
