We believe in the power of grassroots leadership to transform communities. When Sangu Mukawa Godefroy, a refugee changemaker, approached The Pollination Project with his vision for a community education center, our $1,000 grant helped turn that dream into reality. The Scorpion Control Center exemplifies how strategic micro-funding in human rights initiatives creates sustainable community impact. From remote operations, this refugee-led project now has a permanent hub offering educational programs and research opportunities, empowering an entire refugee community. This is what leadership in humanitarian grantmaking looks like: identifying passionate local leaders and providing the resources they need to create lasting change. Watch how one small grant is transforming lives. ⬇️ #SocialImpact #HumanRights #RefugeeEmpowerment #Grantmaking #CommunityDevelopment #NonprofitLeadership #philanthropy #heartivism

To effectively respond to large-scale, complex social challenges, a problem-structuring method is needed. Over the past two years, Chicago and some suburban municipalities have received over 47,000 asylum seekers from the southern border. The arrival of these migrants has revealed systemic failures in addressing real conflicts and providing adequate and humane services to those seeking a safe haven. At the same time, this trigger event has exemplified how city and state officials, intersectional nonprofit organizations, volunteers, and community and racial justice advocates have risen to the occasion and come together. This workshop examines the responses of the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois to welcoming and supporting new arrivals. It will discuss the ongoing challenges and opportunities around migrant resettlement and long-term integration. This session also looks at the “Welcome to Illinois” coalition, established by the Illinois Latino Agenda, as a model of a successful large-scale societal intervention and collaborative coalition building to maximize resources. The workshop will provide participants with some ideas on how to get involved to support our new neighbors and foster intercommunity coalitions equitably. #racialequity #nonprofit #philanthropy #fundraising #chicago #unpackingsolidarity #coalitionbuilding #leadershipexcellence #latinopolicyforum

More than 117 million people were forcibly displaced at the end of 2023 as a result of war, violence, human rights violations, or political, ethnic, gender or religious persecution, according to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. Our team recently developed a new resource, “In Their Own Voices: A Manual for Inclusive, Victim-Centered Documentation and Memorialization of Forced Displacement,” to support civil society organizations, activists, survivors and others as they work to counter negative stereotypes about forcibly displaced people; establish clear and truthful records of the violations that they have faced; and work to hold perpetrators formally accountable. Download this guide to learn about developing a victim-centered approach, building trust, empowering marginalized voices, and using innovative storytelling methods through art, body mapping, and more. #WithRefugees

At The Freedom Fund, we are deeply saddened to see the announcement by the Global Fund to End Modern Slavery (GFEMS) of its plan to conclude its operations by the end of 2024. The funding environment that led to the decision by the GFEMS to conclude its operations is sadly reflective of a global trend. After a surge of engagement and interest in work to end modern slavery globally a decade ago, we are increasingly seeing funders – notably governments and philanthropic foundations (with some honourable exceptions) – scale back their funding of anti-slavery work. This is particularly shortsighted in a time of growing authoritarianism, proliferating conflict and accelerating climate change – all of which are driving increased refugee flows and migration globally and consequent trafficking and slavery. We call on funders dedicated to supporting the most vulnerable and marginalised populations to recommit to efforts to tackle modern slavery globally. https://lnkd.in/eAV7pmVd

#African #philanthropy and practices of #giving are misunderstood. The world assumes African philanthropy is about giving #neighbours and #family, but “The reality is that it’s much broader and deeper. For instance, there’s everyday individual, communal and association-based giving, and there’s institutionalised giving, but the everyday giving… is the least understood.” Thanks to Halima Mahomed for this great article on ‘embedded giving’ practices in African Philanthropy. In the article, Halima Mahomed identifies four characteristics of African Philanthropy - and we think it would be beneficial to people in the development space to get schooled! Giving is rooted in notions of solidarity, mutuality and collective identity. In Africa, giving also means giving from a place of scarcity, not only excess. Kinship. In Canada or the west, when you think of family, you think of the nuclear family. Here, family is also your extended family… Kinship is understood through links of family, community and association with others. Africans do also give to institutions, to movements and to civic organisations, not just to their families and communities. Hot off the press! 🌟 Read about the impact of Every Second Counts, CAFOD's major donor initiative raising flexible funding for our humanitarian work, focusing on silent/under-reported and protracted emergencies: https://lnkd.in/dnn4uUHT It was great to help work on the past year's annual report, working with programmes and donor-facing staff to 'translate' the complexity of our emergency response work so that it is digestible and hopefully inspiring for donors -- and through an anti-racist, decolonial lens rooted in Catholic Social Teaching. In the report, you can see spotlights on: • CAFOD's humanitarian advocacy work - local leadership of crisis response • Emergency preparedness, and helping partners access more funding • El Niño and disaster risk reduction • The role of the Catholic Church in emergency response • Our work with refugees and internally displaced people • Wellbeing and resilience support for communities affected by conflict As a member of our humanitarian team said in a meeting, "When you have access to flexible funding, it’s like cold yogurt: it’s so refreshing. We have freedom to design the project according to the community's needs and get it quickly off the ground." Feedback is most welcome, and I'm always keen to discuss more about how we convey dignity and agency of communities and participants in our donor-facing comms (and, of course, finding new donors for this great work 👀 ) https://lnkd.in/dnn4uUHT #Philanthropy #EmergencyResponse #HumanitarianPhilanthropy #CatholicPhilanthropy #FaithBasedPhilanthropy #DisasterRiskReduction #Advocacy #TrustBasedPhilanthropy #SocialJustice #EnvironmentalJustice #FlexibleFunding #TransformativePhilanthropy
