I had the chance to participate in a FuelEU webinar this week. An interesting topic came up: Does the FuelEU and ETS give an unfair advantage to the larger shipping companies? On the one hand, the answer seems to be clearly yes. Large companies can hire whole departments to develop strategies that lower the cost of compliance. While smaller companies will be left paying the highest penalties. Two reasons to be skeptical: 1. The minimum threshold of 5,000 gross tonnes should exclude the smallest companies. The EU’s Impact Assessment notes that the limit excludes around 95% of SMEs. A 5,000 gross tonne container vessel could carry roughly 500 containers -- not exactly an Irina-class vessel but also not a river barge. 2. The FuelEU, in particular, provides incentives for innovation in green shipping. While big companies have big investment budgets, they also have large fleets that anchor them in the status quo. As policies start to bite, we could see innovation from companies somewhere in between -- big enough to make risky bets but without being too big to be stuck in the status quo. The big winners of automotive decarbonization, driven by subsidies and fuel standards, have not been the incumbent automakers but disruptive outsiders that place bets on innovation. Funding through subsidies and the sale of compliance credits, helped scale these innovative car companies. The big automakers experimented with electrification but were eventually tamed by their shareholders to stick with the status quo. FuelEU will be particularly hard for smaller companies. But some of these companies will see the opportunities and innovate. Those that make wise bets could be the future leaders of the industry.

Project INCONE60Green – Digital and Green Transition of Small Ports has been launched. ⚓ The first project meeting occurred today at the Offshore Center in Gdańsk, where key activities were discussed. Our team was represented by CEO Andrzej Chybicki. 🛳 The main goal of the INCONE60Green Project is to develop digital solutions for green and low-emission practices in small ports in the Baltic regions. The project, led by the Gdynia Maritime University, brings together partners from various sectors. The world's largest hydrogen-fuelled ship is set to be constructed in Norway. "Operating at an average speed of 17 knots in often challenging conditions, the vessels will navigate the 278km-long Vestfjordstrekninga ferry route connecting Bodø, the islands of Røst and Værøy, and Moskenes. A hydrogen storage unit onboard the vessel will feed gas to the fuel cells, creating electricity to propel the vessels and power their auxiliary systems, reducing CO2-emissions on the route by around 26,500 tons each year. The alternative fuel newbuilds with biodiesel backup, bring together LR as the class society, owner Torghatten Nord, The Norwegian Ship Design Company, Myklebust Verft shipyard, systems integrator SEAM, and hydrogen supplier GreenH." For short-sea, small and medium sized vessels, hydrogen fuel cell propulsions seem to be a good fit. Some challenges to look out for: 1. Purity of Hydrogen fuel bunkered. 2. Durability of the fuel cells. 3. Guidelines to safely handle and store hydrogen fuel, best practices could be learnt from LNG/bio/e-methane. Additional potential benefit of hydrogen as a fuel, as with bio/e-methane: 1. Possible provisions to recover waste cold from cryogenic systems, which could be used in the Air-conditioning/refrigeration systems. What are your thoughts on this?
