The Careers & Enterprise Company’s Post

🌍 Primary pupils don't need to know exactly what they want to be when they grow up, but it's important to keep their minds open to the possibilities. Pupils start to adopt stereotypes based on gender, ethnicity and social background from an early age, but by embedding career-related learning into your primary curriculum, you can help to challenge those stereotypes. ⭐ 278 employer encounters took place in the first wave of our pilot primary programme, Start Small; Dream Big. Early insights from our pilot show a rise in pupils' careers knowledge and confidence, and a decrease in the influence of stereotypes. • "The construction industry is sometimes victim to a perception problem. Stereotypes have led to ideas of what roles are available and what skills/people work in the industry. By getting involved at key stage 1 and 2, we are able to challenge stereotypes and promote the vast opportunities that people aren't aware of. There is no pressure on the pupils to decide at such an early stage, but the more exposure to a variety of options can make that process easier later."

They don't NEED to know what they want to do AT ALL The project challenges stereotypes and raising aspirations amongst other aims. Please check your use of language as MODERN careers is not about "knowing what job you want to do" it's about empowering, resilience, flexibility etc etc #morethantalkingaboutjobs

Wonderful initiative CEC and Tilbury Douglas 👏 Having spent 3 years at a construction company following a teaching career, I saw what a fascinating industry it is. I'm glad those pupils are having their eyes opened a little earlier!
