For decades, Africa's creative economy has thrived solely on its immediate creators. With Nigeria recently becoming the world's sixth largest music exporting country, behind giants such as the USA, UK, Colombia and South Korea, it's important to recognize that Africa's creative industry is full of potential. However, one question remains: how involved is the financial sector? In an article shared on Nigerian tech media TechCabal, Tochi Louis founder of The Jollof Diary, a data, business and market intelligence platform for the creative economy and music sector in Africa interviewed other key players in the field. Wakiuru Njuguna , Managing Director of HEVA Fund, spoke about the financial sector's skepticism towards the African creative industry. What do you think of her point of view ? -————- We are Fanaka&Co, your partner in the design and implementation of public policies to support the development of the private sector in Africa.

Content Creation in the Marketplace: Genz Meets Momz(s) - Part 1. If I don't tell you, you may not know this is Ghana and think its Nigeria, Benin Republic and more. I can relate as a Nigerian because its exactly the same setup in markets here. Many parts of Africa are similar, the divide created the differences in the shape of nations. My son said: mom these are moms dancing. African children always have many moms 😃. Its called respect. A community brings up a child. Did anyone imagine that content creation in the marketplace contributes to a creative economy and copyright industry? Hail Ghana for the HAPPY TOWN PROJECT. I love it. Basically telling the world we have happy people regardless of our challenges. Something about Africa 🌍. Hardship never takes away its joy. Its a happy continent, not a dark continent.

This is good news for Africa because of the massive investment opportunities and jobs it will bring into the entertainment industry, leading to growth. However, this brings to fore the need for Africa to build the necessary infrastructure. Live music thrives on good infrastructure like arenas, stadia and theatres. 🏛️ How many O2 Arena's do we have in Africa? How many Madison Squares?🏟️ Particularly in Nigeria that boasts to be the bastion of Afrobeats, Africa's championing sound, how many standard facilities can the country boast off? However, I commend Live Nation Entertainment for believing in Africa and for this bold move. Its plan to build a 12,000 capacity structure in Lagos is a testament to its belief in Africa's potential. Factors affecting creativity and creatives in Nigeria and Africa at large. Firstly, the Creative Industry comprises of several players across diverse sectors like film, theatre, music, dance, literature, fashion, television, radio, arts, sports, information technology, media, advertising and gaming. One of the biggest obstacles to creativity is the fear of failure. Many people avoid taking risks, trying new things, or expressing their opinions because they are afraid of making mistakes, being rejected, or facing criticism. This leads to a lack of confidence, motivation, and originality by creatives. This without a doubt is fact and true but on a second thought, after considering the "biggest obstacles," let's ponder over these: Where are the motivational measures set aside to support creatives who really want to excel in the creative industry? WHERE ARE : 1 - Collaborative Support from other successful creators? 2 - Financial Support? 3 - Constructive Criticism? 4 - Access to internet for resources and stable power supply? 5 - Monetization of creatives works, pitching and bidding for GIGS? 6 - Copyright Policies that works? Ask yourself as creatives in Nigeria and Africa, do you have access to all these listed above; and if YES how easy was it for you ? What practical solution can be adopted in combating this? Creatives, let's talk ! #Nigeria #creatives #creativity #Africa

Many might assume radio's golden age is behind us, but here in Nigeria, radio remains a vital source of information and entertainment. I recently came across this fascinating article exploring 100 years of radio in Africa, highlighting its evolution from government mouthpiece to a platform for "people's power." Radio is still so relevant in Nigeria because it reaches remote areas where internet access is limited. Radio stations cater to specific communities, fostering a sense of connection and cultural identity, and call-in shows and listener participation create a powerful space for dialogue and civic engagement. As an IP lawyer, I recognize the importance of protecting the creative works produced by radio broadcasters, including music, dramas, and original content. Strong IP protection fosters innovation and ensures creators are fairly compensated. What are your thoughts on the continued relevance of radio in Africa? The Power of Accommodation "Room for one, room for all." Accommodation is a step further than tolerance, it’s the intentional act of creating space for others. The Gwari and Hausa communities in Abuja have shown how shared governance and compromise can lead to peaceful coexistence. By rotating leadership roles, they ensure inclusivity in decision-making. Think of Nollywood, a unifying cultural force where filmmakers from different regions collaborate. By accommodating diverse narratives, they project a unified Nigerian story to the world. Accommodation reflects the Nigerian spirit of ‘Ubuntu’ ( South Africa) "I am because we are." Our unity is strengthened when we give others room to thrive. ( Humanity Towards Others). Poser: Empathy transforms coexistence into understanding. Tomorrow, we’ll explore its transformative power in Nigerian communities." THE NEED FOR LOCALIZED CONTENT IN ZAMBIAN RADIO SEGMENTS As I tune into various Zambian radio shows, I am struck by the significant emphasis on foreign content. Segments like "What Happened While You Were Sleeping" are focused on international stories. It makes me wonder: doesn't Zambia have news happening while we sleep? Similarly, "Today in History" or "Whose birthday is it", often highlights foreign events and famous people, overshadowing our rich local history. This trend raises an important issue. When our media prioritizes foreign stories over our own, we inadvertently foster a gap in local knowledge. Many of our children and even adults can recount details about foreign countries more readily than about Zambia, the very country we live in and call home. By focusing on Zambian news and history these stories help us understand and appreciate the unique make up of our society, empowering us to make informed decisions and engage more meaningfully in our communities. Let's champion the inclusion of more Zambian content in our media. By doing so, we nurture a well-informed, proud, and cohesive nation. #LocalContent #ZambianStories #NationalPride #MediaDiversity #CulturalAwareness #SupportLocalNews
