Major expectations ahead for #CORSIA in 2025! Recent developments are transforming the landscape for international aviation emissions compliance: ✅ In November, ICAO approved four new carbon standards, bringing the total to six First Phase-approved standards. ✅ COP29 finalized the Article 6 rulebook, sending a strong signal for countries to facilitate international markets, including CORSIA. ✅ This week, ICAO released detailed requirements for eligible emissions units and exclusions, shaping the supply landscape. With demand for CORSIA-eligible carbon credits expected to soar, and supply already tight, airlines must act fast to secure the credits they need. The pressure will only increase as we approach 2027, when offsetting requirements expand to almost all international flights worldwide. Our latest blog provides an updated picture of where we stand with CORSIA-eligible carbon credit supply: 👉 What is CORSIA’s First Phase and why is it important for the VCM? 👉 What do the latest CORSIA updates mean for the future of sustainable aviation and carbon credits? 👉 How can you benefit from this strategic opportunity? ✈️ International Air Transport Association (IATA) Confirms Net Zero by 2050 is Achievable for Aviation! 🌍 The International Air Transport Association (IATA) remains confident that the aviation industry can achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. However, success will depend on the global collaboration of policymakers, businesses, and industries. Key to decarbonization is the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), which is projected to make up two-thirds of the emissions reduction. The investment needed is significant – around $128 billion per year to produce enough SAF and meet the industry’s goals. 💡 Highlights: IATA's new analysis and roadmaps outline the path to net zero. Policymakers need to act with urgency and unity. The transition to alternative aviation fuels will be expensive, but the opportunities are even greater. It's time for all stakeholders to come together and support the aviation sector in its journey toward a more sustainable future. As the European Union Emissions Trading System deadline looms, aviation operators are actively preparing reports and securing EU allowances. Despite significant investment through allowance purchases, with 76% of auction revenue from 2013-2022 channeled towards climate initiatives, the anticipated visible outcomes remain elusive. This raises critical questions about the efficiency and impact of these expenditures. The Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) program for global aviation stands out as a more effective solution for emission reductions compared to ETS, offering not just immediate benefits but also supporting international climate cooperation and aviation’s journey towards net-zero by 2050. However, the potential competition distortion posed by national or regional ETS schemes cannot be overlooked. It's essential to ensure that ETS regulations do not inadvertently disadvantage airlines and operators from different regions, preserving the competitive integrity vital for consumers. The industry must prioritize a balanced approach that supports CORSIA's global initiatives while addressing ETS's regional or national challenges. Achieving this balance is crucial for sustainable aviation and fair market competition. #SustainabilityInAviation #EUETS #CORSIA #ClimateChange #Aviation #azzera

"The EU has long questioned the environmental integrity of CORSIA's offsets. Eurocontrol data shows that over 50% of European aviation CO2 emissions come from just 6% of flights - primarily long-haul flights over 4,000 km, mostly to non-EEA countries. Expanding the EU ETS would also level the playing field for carbon pricing, as intra-EEA airlines currently face higher ETS costs than legacy airlines with long-haul networks, which would be most affected by the expansion." Ishka: Aviation Finance has covered the hot topic in their newsletter, EU ETS Expansion. Will China, India and Russia participate in CORSIA when it becomes mandatory? All signs are pointing to no. If not, will the US continue to support ICAO's proposed decarbonisation scheme? 2026 is not far away. How are you looking at the sustainable transition? #risk #sustainableaviation #CORSIA #euets

The UN, through the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), has validated carbon credits for programs run by Verra, Gold Standard and Climate Action Reserve. The UN should never be in a position to affect market economics for two key reasons. Their decision to select a few organization will distort prices, stifle innovation, and create barriers for smaller or newer players. That is because ICAO controls demand within CORSIA and CORSIA applies to all international aviation emissions. Airlines are forced to rely on providers authorised under CORSIA. Moreover, as demand scales, oversight of these carbon credit programs will become increasingly difficult. Standards will likely slip as credit providers begin to prioritize volume over quality.

📢 ICAO Expands Carbon Offset Options, Paving the Way for a Greener Sky ✈️ International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has just approved three additional voluntary carbon standards — Verra, Gold Standard, and Climate Action Reserve — for Phase 1 of the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) (2024-26). This expansion of eligible #carbon offset projects is a significant step forward for the #aviation industry. By embracing these new standards, airlines and other aviation stakeholders can now take more decisive action to reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to a more #sustainablefuture. While this development is undoubtedly positive, several hurdles remain in the implementation of the #CORSIA program. A key challenge is ensuring that #emissions reductions are not double-counted. This requires corresponding adjustments (CAs) from host countries, which have been slow to materialise. Developing countries, in particular, face significant challenges in establishing the necessary infrastructure for efficient and transparent #carbonmarkets. To mitigate these risks, private sector providers have introduced insurance products, but these cannot fully eliminate political risks. The approval of these new standards signifies a collective commitment to responsible aviation practices. As the industry embarks on this new era of #sustainable aviation, it is imperative to celebrate this milestone and continue to push for a #greenerfuture. #GREENIPATH #GreenPathForward #ICAO #Verra #GoldStandard #ClimateActionReserve #greenfuture #sustainability #sustainabledevelopment #climate #climateaction #climatecrisis #sdgs #ESG #portfoliomanagement #environment #impact #nature #netzero
