CFM International (CFM), a collaboration between GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines, is advancing its RISE technology demonstration program to address environmental challenges in the aviation sector. The RISE (Revolutionary Innovation for Sustainable Engines) program focuses on developing a new engine architecture that promises to reduce fuel consumption by at least 20% compared to current engines. Additionally, it addresses important issues such as noise pollution and contrail formation. To coincide with the Farnborough Air Show, senior CFM executives shared insights into the program's progress with Sustainability In The Air: https://lnkd.in/dYSj7RyD #openfan #sustainableaviation

Check out this great article on the latest in Aviation testing. On January 19, 2024, Safran, in partnership with GE Aerospace, initiated wind-tunnel tests for the "RISE" technology project, marking a significant advancement in jet engine design aimed at the next generation of medium-haul jets. This innovative project explores the development of an open-bladed jet engine, which promises to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by 20% from the mid-next decade. It is envisioned as a successor to the "LEAP" model, currently used in the Boeing 737 MAX and approximately half of the Airbus A320neo jets. The design of the "RISE" engine is most easily recognized by its large visible fan blades whose diameter is twice that of today's models. A critical aspect of the future certification process will focus on ensuring the safe handling of blade failures, especially since the front fan, responsible for the majority of the engine's thrust, will not be enclosed in the traditional housing. The testing is being conducted in the historic S1MA wind tunnel located in Avrieux, France, within the scenic French Alps. This facility is the largest wind tunnel of its kind, capable of simulating or exceeding typical cruise speeds by accelerating air towards the sound barrier. The S1MA wind tunnel has a history of testing iconic aircraft, including the Concorde and the Airbus A380, and operates entirely on hydroelectric power. This project is a forward-thinking approach to jet engine design, with the potential to significantly impact fuel efficiency and emissions in the aviation industry. #aviation #windtunnel #S1MA #Safran https://lnkd.in/eJ8Uwgsj

The power of vision … as CFM International (CFM) celebrates its 50th anniversary, we displayed a model of the technologies in development through the RISE program for the future of more sustainable commercial flight at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce 2024 Global Aerospace Summit. To help achieve the #aviation industry’s net zero ambition, new, more efficient engine technologies are needed like Open Fan architecture. As we look to the future of CFM, Open Fan, compact core, hybrid electric and other RISE program technologies could once again change how we all fly. GE Aerospace #CFM50Years

« Sustainable Lessons from Eco-Pulse Reported by Daher, Safran and Airbus » as reported by Julie Boatman of JulietBravoFox Media LLC. There's been a lot of coverage of the Eco-Pulse story of late. However, if you really want to understand its implications we recommend this new article (excerpt): « The aircraft at its heart is a technology demonstrator, in which a standard Pratt & Whitney PT6 turboprop engine remains in place on a tried-and-tested Daher TBM 900-series airframe. It’s joined by six Safran ePropellers on the wings integrated with a Safran-built turbogenerator and Airbus’ high-voltage battery pack … » Continue reading Julie's story with link. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gFJDyq48 🏷️ #ecopulse #electricflight #innovation 🏞️ 🛩️ ⚡️ 📸 Airbus, DAHER and Safran

I remember writing about it 2 years ago, when ATR , the leading turboprop aircraft maker, announced their new airplane concept, called EVO. At that time, I had no idea I will be reunited with this airplane here at Cebu Pacific Air, after 15 years. While the newest model, the 72-600, is more advanced than the older versions, the EVO promises a lot more. The biggest leap will be an hybrid-electric powertrain which will be more fuel efficient and 100% SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) ready. The current target is to get the aircraft ready by 2030, which is ambitious considering the many challenges that the industry is facing today, most notably in the areas of supply chain and raw material availability. I am also very excited to see this technology evolve in comparison with the CFM International (CFM) RISE engines (also an open fan architecture) and the Airbus ZEROe platform which also presented a concept turboprop, powered by hydrogen. Overall a commendable effort towards sustainability in the regional markets and here's wishing the teams working on these path breaking ideas the very best. Thank you La Tribune and Boris Georgelin for welcoming me at the 2024 AéroForum to discuss the very important notion of ecosystem when it comes to creating the future decarbonized aerospace industry with Stéphane Viala and Isabelle Laplace. Ecosystems are at the core of H3 Dynamics's DNA as we are creating the bridges between the #hydrogen and the #aerospace industry. They are also essential in order to design complex, performant and certifiable fuel cell systems as we need to work with different partners to meet the expectations of OEMs and regulation agencies. Hydrogen will play a key role in decarbonizing aviation, either directly with fuel cell systems or indirectly as it is a crucial element in the production of e-SAF. It is time for the stakeholders to organize themselves in order to maintain the pace of decarbonization essential to our sector.
