Thanksgiving gatherings can be a whirlwind of activity, and that can sometimes be overwhelming for kids (and adults!). Here's how to create some calming spaces and moments amidst the holiday bustle: 🔕 Quiet Zone: Designate a quiet room or corner where kids can retreat for some peace and quiet. Include calming items like soft blankets, pillows, books, or sensory toys. ⏲️ Scheduled Breaks: Plan short breaks throughout the day where kids can step away from the excitement. Even 15 minutes can help them recharge. 🎶 Sensory Activities: Offer calming sensory activities like coloring, play dough, puzzles, or listening to quiet music. 🌤️ Outdoor Time: Encourage some outdoor playtime to burn off energy and enjoy fresh air. Recognize that every child is different. Some might thrive in the excitement, while others need more downtime. Be responsive to their cues. By creating a balance between festive fun and peaceful moments, you can help everyone enjoy a happy and stress-free Thanksgiving. #SensoryFriendly #CalmKids #HolidayWellbeing #SHIELDWV

Just in case you need to see it… …my laundry room! Which, in all reality is a fabulous symbol of our current state of life, in The Downhill Slide season where we’re not sure what to do between Halloween and Thanksgiving, so we just do it all. Schedules are overflowing (just like our Halloween dress-up bins in the photo), and being behind is even more normal this time of year. Just look to the piles of dirty and clean clothes everywhere for affirmation. My biggest piece of advice (to myself, here and in general for this season)? Baby steps. One thing at a time. The most important things first. Give everyone extra grace & patience. What room in your house is most representative of your life right now??

It’s almost Halloween, one of the biggest party holidays of the year. It is no secret that in social settings with alcohol we see people cross boundaries, use alcohol as a tool to excuse their bad behavior or make people uncomfortable, and isolate people from others. There is always something we can do to check in and help out. In every situation, de-escalation is our superpower. The goal of de-escalation is simple, to quickly build rapport and a sense of connection with someone who is agitated. We do this with words, body-language, and by controlling our own emotions to be calm and reassuring. ⭐️ Here are some de-escalation basics ⭐️ Step 1: Listen to the person’s concerns. Step 2: Reflect back and summarize their thoughts to show that you are listening. Step 3: When a person challenges your authority, redirect their attention to the issue at hand. Ignore the challenge, and bring their focus back to how you can work together to solve the problem. Step 4: Offer concise and respectful choices and consequences. Be clear, speak simply, and offer the positive choice first. There are going to be times when you check in and help out and it feels really good. But there are also going to be times when you try to help someone and it’s a bit more complicated. Maybe it doesn’t feel good. Maybe you’re not sure how to feel. Talk to someone about what happened and when the time comes, be ready to pay it forward by offering support to someone else. Want more? Want to stay organized for Thanksgiving 🦃 ? Keeping it simple is the solution: Simplify Your Plans. Prioritize: Focus on what truly matters Prep Ahead: Make a checklist and tackle tasks like grocery shopping, prepping ingredients, or setting the table a day or two in advance. Set Realistic Expectations and let Go of Perfection: Thanksgiving doesn’t have to be picture-perfect. Focus on creating a warm and joyful atmosphere rather than chasing perfection. Be Flexible: Things might not go as planned, and that’s okay. Adapt and embrace the moment instead of stressing over hiccups. Carve Out Time for Yourself and schedule Breaks: Take short moments to relax, whether it’s a quick walk, deep breathing, or simply stepping away from the crowd. Keep It Light and incorporate activities you enjoy, like watching a movie, playing games, or cuddling with your dog for some extra warmth and calm. Gobble gobble. 🦃 #thanksgivingprep #organizingforthanksgiving #anorganizedlife #helporganizing #keepitsimple #thanksgiving #helporganizing #bostonorganizer #bestbostonorganizer

Every holiday season, my family has a little tradition. We set out a container of snacks and a cooler filled with drinks for delivery drivers. It's simple, but it radiates warmth. The best part of it is how it has become one of our kids' favorite traditions. Every night, they eagerly gather around to watch the doorbell video footage. Seeing the drivers stop by, hearing them talk to the camera, say thank you, or just acknowledge the act of kindness brings so much joy to them. They light up with excitement when we discuss Thanksgiving plans, immediately mentioning this tradition of setting out treats. They love picking out the snacks and drinks, a job they take very seriously because, let's be honest, the leftovers are pretty appealing too. I adore their enthusiasm—not just for the tasty treats or the holiday cheer—but for the genuine feedback from people. When a delivery driver takes a moment to smile or speak to the camera, it makes their day. And if someone passes by without grabbing a snack or drink, they get busy figuring out why. Their curiosity and problem-solving skills shine. It's amazing how such a small gesture can create lasting memories. This tradition has taught my kids the true essence of kindness and has sparked countless conversations about empathy and gratitude. It's those simple acts and connections that make the holiday season truly magical. What traditions does your family have? #HolidayTraditions #ActsOfKindness #GratitudeMatters
