A friend told me about a cool refactor he did but couldn't explain why he did it. After asking 3 Whys, we got down to the bottom of it, and we were able to formulate the benefit of the refactor in business terms. It is really important to know how to translate what we do, so that the business appreciates it. Practice, ask for assistance from your team leader, and make sure you are aligned with the current business goals. Remember: we are problem solvers, not code monkeys! If you're hiring a high caliber software engineer this week (or month), know that there are two kinds of top performers. Both of them: - consistently over-deliver - are incredibly fast - know their stuff But one hordes their expertise and the other shares it. One stands out while the other lifts up. One excels while the other helps a team excel. You're rarely looking for the first kind, but you hire it more often than not. Because your hiring questions and strategies don't make this distinction. As a result, you hire a sprinter who wants to win a 100 meter race, when what you needed was someone to run one leg of a relay race. Make sure you're hiring the person who knows they're playing a team sport!

It would take 28 days for me to walk from Westminster in London, to Berlin, including time for sleep, breaks, and the Channel crossing. Mind-blowing to think that this is also the average time it takes a company to hire a Software Engineer. If your hiring is taking longer than 28 days, there's a problem.
