An airline alliance is an agreement of cooperation between multiple airlines. The carriers can share flights, passenger service operational costs such as ticketing, check-in, luggage handling, lounge services, ground services and even their individual frequent flyer programs.
Although Airline Alliances benefit both the airlines and their customers by reducing their own operational costs, its only drawback is its potential of creating monopoly on certain routes by deterring other airlines to operate on the same route.
The fact that SAS found itself in serious financial difficulties, filed for Chapter 11, and Air France-KLM was operating as one of the cornerstones of rival Skyteam forced one of the founding members of the Star Alliance to change partners. SAS's recent revisions of its how-tos were possibly inevitable in order to survive a deep financial crisis.
