The airline’s financial struggles come after failed merger attempts with Frontier Airlines and JetBlue Airways, which could have provided much-needed financial relief. In response, Spirit is considering cost-cutting measures such as reducing flights, selling aircraft, and exploring other operational adjustments. Liquidation of Jet Airways was a necessary step toward true justice and resolution. Spirit Airlines, an icon of budget air travel with bright yellow planes that pioneered the no-frills service in exchange for rock-bottom fares to the point that it's become a favorite punchline of late-night comedians, has filed for bankruptcy protection. How did it get here? An engine recall, increased competition domestically, more demanding consumers and this year's big catalyst, a judge that blocked Spirit's acquisition by JetBlue Airways. Meanwhile, more than $1 billion in debt payments due in less than 12 months loomed over the cash-starved airline. Spirit's CEO Ted Christie tried to reassure customers that they can still book on Spirit, use loyalty points and credits normally. The chapter 11 filing is "prearranged" with the majority of Spirit's bondholders and that it plans to exit the process by early next year. Will Frontier Airlines get its next shot at merging with Spirit soon? Is this a warning to other low-cost carriers?
