"We know that every kid can learn to read. The burden is on our system to figure out why 70 percent of kids aren’t reading on grade level. Are our teachers being trained to succeed in kindergarten through 2nd and 3rd grade? Are school systems using instructional resources based on research?" asks Rebecca Kockler, Executive Director of Reading Reimagined, one of our Advanced Education Research and Development Fund (AERDF) programs, in this week's Education Week article below. She and her team are exploring ways to end illiteracy and better support older students with foundational reading skills. More students than researchers previously thought struggle to decode or, use their knowledge of letter sounds to sound out complex, multisyllabic words. Reading Reimagined focuses on creating solutions to help older students with insufficient decoding skills that block them from comprehending grade-level text, which is essential for learning. A $30,000 Educational Success Renewal grant from GCF is supporting early literacy through “Books Alive!,” a program by Learning Through Art, Inc. that encourages reading by pairing sight, sound, and touch elements with popular stories. According to Ohio Department of Education, the third-grade reading efficiency rate, a critical indicator of future academic success, is only 62% statewide and 58% in Cincinnati. Innovative programs like “Books Alive!” are designed to ensure that all students receive the resources they need to succeed, an area GCF will double down as a community impact focus. It's National Literacy Month! Literacy is the key to helping children thrive, but Georgia is home to some troubling statistics. In Georgia (2022): 📕 32% of 4th graders are proficient in reading. 📘 22% of Black and Latinx 4th graders are proficient, compared to 45% of their white peers. 📗 21% of 4th graders on free or reduced lunch are proficient, while 47% of their non-eligible peers are reading at grade level. ❓But it’s just 4th grade❓ It’s easy to believe kids will catch up, but the reality is that 4th grade is a critical turning point. The Annie E. Casey Foundation highlights that this is when students move from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” If a child isn’t reading proficiently by 4th grade, the road ahead becomes even tougher. 1️⃣ in 6️⃣ children who aren’t proficient by 3rd grade don’t graduate high school on time. They’re 4x more likely to fall behind than their peers. 3️⃣ out of 5️⃣ students who didn’t graduate high school were reading below grade level in 3rd grade. But the story doesn’t end here! High-quality early childhood education can change the trajectory for every child, no matter their background or circumstances. We can make a difference. I am not sure if this was already shared online and I missed it, but even if it was, it is worth sharing again. The article speaks specifically to digital literacy in adult education. Seeing relevant issues about access to funds for technology (especially in adult education programs), internet, training for staff and students, etc. and then that the study was done in Texas by Texas A & M including Dr. Glenda Rose was great! 📊 Last year, we implemented five major literacy initiatives and, after assessing the effectiveness of our programs, we're ensuring we put our resources toward scalable and sustainable initiatives that will have the greatest impact: Family Reads Program: ✅ Scale As a result of Family Reads’ success, we are not only continuing to support students at Soddy Elementary School but have also scaled the program to Calvin Donaldson, East Lake, and Woodmore Elementary Schools. Literacy First Tutoring Model: ✅ Scale The Literacy First Model's personalized approach and consistent progress monitoring have been key to building students' confidence and literacy skills. The program has now been scaled to 12 elementary schools in Hamilton County and will impact at least 500 children this year. Out-of-School Time K-2 Literacy Toolkit: ✅ Scale The OST K-2 Literacy Toolkit is designed to “right size” literacy supports for afterschool programs. After a successful pilot in the spring with two OST providers, the program is now being scaled to four providers this year. I’m often asked what kind of high school Mt. Scott Learning Center is. Is it a public school? A private school? An alternative school? A charter school? The answer is a combination of all of these. Now in its 28th year of operation, Mt. Scott is a fully accredited, nonprofit organization registered with the Oregon Department of Education as a private alternative school. Yes, we are officially recognized as a private (non-public) alternative school – and the Portland Business Journal recently named Mt. Scott one of the top private schools in the Portland area. However, we do NOT charge tuition and we only serve public school students from Portland Public Schools and other school districts that choose to partner with us. Mt. Scott Learning Center provides an educational setting tailored to the needs of high school students who struggle to fulfill their potential in the traditional school environment. Our goal is to reengage students with their education and support each of them along their unique path to a diploma. We accomplish this through a high-touch culture of trust and transparency, small class sizes, differentiated instruction, 1:1 case management for every student with a support team of multiple adults, and postsecondary preparedness training in our specialized Transitions Program.   What impact is Mt. Afterschool, vacation, and summer programs were key beneficiaries of federal stimulus dollars. But the expiration of ESSER funds means these types of programs may be first on the chopping block for district spending. In a new op-ed, Emma Banay, manager of the Inspired Minds portfolio, points to the important role high-quality out-of-school-time programs play in children's holistic development. “What’s really special about them isn’t just the opportunity to improve academic skills. It’s that they are — simply put — fun.” Programs from grantees including FIRST, DiscoverE, Learn Fresh, National Inventors Hall of Fame, and National 4-H Council provide academic benefits while also supporting children’s social-emotional development, such as improved interpersonal skills and stronger peer-to-peer and peer-to-adult relationships.
