Never knew there was "traditional" class of Methanogens! 🤔
Academicians should take note of this and follow LinkedIn posts for updating their scientific knowledge than Google Scholar.
Anyways, to the best of my knowledge, methanogens are categorised based on the substrates they utilise.
1. Hydrogenotrophic Methanogens - Utilise H2 and CO2
2. Aceticlastic Methanogens (in some literature it is also mentioned as Acetoclastic) - Use acetic acid (or acetate)
3. Methylotrophic Methanogens - Rely on methanol, methylamines or other methylated compounds.
In the context of biogas production, the cow’s gut harbours all three types, making cow dung an excellent and cost-effective inoculum for starting biogas digesters.
Isolating and augmenting specific methanogens in a biogas digester is a complex and challenging task, particularly at the lab scale, not to mention the industrial scale, where the economics of such operations can be prohibitive. Moreover, the symbiotic relationship between bacteria and methanogens is critical in the effective breakdown of lignocellulosic or organic substrates for methane production.
So, in practice, adding fresh cow dung to a biogas digester naturally enriches the microbial community, establishing an efficient balance through optimized nutritional and process parameters.
