Head of people and culture let me ask you this, when was the last time you designed a handshake? Odd question yet it's possibly one of the many ritual that exist in your workplace. Every single day is full of these small interactions and rituals that make up our workplace culture • It's the laughs shared over 10am coffee, • The supportive nods during a presentation • It the fist bump after you smashed it • The quiet moments of empathy between colleagues when someone needs to vent out or provide feedback In my adventure of culture design, and what culture means across different organizations, I've come to appreciate the 'nano experiences.' These are not the headline-grabbing team achievements or the celebrated product launches, but the almost invisible, everyday actions and exchanges that foster a sense of belonging and community. It's in these moments that culture is both tested and strengthened. How we handle the minor setbacks, celebrate the small victories, and support each other through everyday challenges speaks volumes more than any official policy or mission statement. 👀 Look around you. What 'nano experiences' are you part of? How do you contribute to the invisible yet invaluable fabric of your workplace culture? On Friday, I witnessed firsthand the profound impact of human connection and culture in delivering exceptional experiences. While picking up my wife, who works at Waitrose, I saw her extend kindness and compassion to a grieving customer. Despite the lady's recent loss of her husband just the day before, my wife took the time to comfort her, help with her shopping, and even sat with her to provide support. This simple act of empathy and care truly resonated with me. Reflecting on this experience, I am reminded of the essential role of fostering a client-centric culture within organizations. To truly excel in experience design, businesses must prioritize creating a workplace culture that empowers employees at all levels to go above and beyond for their customers. As the saying goes, 'culture eats strategy for breakfast' – emphasizing the significance of nurturing a culture that values empathy, kindness, and human connection. This encounter serves as a powerful reminder that exceptional experiences go beyond just digital interfaces. They are rooted in genuine human interactions and a culture that encourages and enables employees to embody empathy and kindness in their interactions with clients.
