I am a hotel wellness director... AND To prove I’m better than the previous director, here’s what I plan to do: 👉🏼 Bring in a new product house and change the treatment menu. 👉🏼 Create a fancy Excel sheet collecting stats on spa & wellness performance. 👉🏼 Send the GM monthly KPI reports (REVPATH, spa occupancy, therapist productivity, retail sales, etc.) to show how much I know about yield management. 👉🏼 Use the SOPs from my previous company, a well-known spa management company, to show how good I am. 👉🏼 Run several promotions and hope they'll sell. ... BUT I will not ask: 👉🏼 Why the previous wellness director didn't reach objectives. 👉🏼 For support from an external specialist to help boost revenues as I can do it all on my own. 👉🏼 My GM for a training course to improve my skills – otherwise they'll think I don't know wellness. AND When things don’t go as planned and the GM is disappointed, I’ll: 👉🏼 Feel all alone, with no help whatsoever. 👉🏼 Blame the GM for not understanding wellness and giving me the right support. 👉🏼 Resent my team for not being okay with working even harder. Question: 👉🏼 How does this serve us? 🤔 _________ If you want to break past this vicious cycle, sign up for my free mini-course, From Neglected to Respected. → Join 100 wellness leaders turning their situation around. → Link in comments below.
This post is a gesture of tough love to our wellness leaders (and to a younger version of myself). I've walked that path, and it never served me. If we want to change the way wellness is perceived in hotels, then it's on us to do things differently and own our part.
