For us, environmental sustainability is a key focus area in both South Africa and the UK. For years, we have put various initiatives in place in an effort to continue reducing our carbon footprint – and it’s paying off.
Last year, we reduced our scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon footprint by 19%, and this is on top of the 19% reduction we achieved the year prior. This is mostly due to our investment into renewable energy, where we’ve invested over R63.5 million and generated over 6.0 million kWh of solar energy to date. We currently have over 58% of our portfolio fitted with solar PV systems, with another 12 installations planned over the coming 9 months. Even though power demand across the portfolio is increasing as we expand, emissions generated continue to decline.
It’s not only solar that we are focusing on. Other initiatives include battery and inverter systems, LED motion sensor lighting, insulated building materials, rainwater harvesting, storm water management, recycling, waste management, water leak detection technology, and more.
We consider our buildings to be far more than just bricks and mortar, and we strive to improve each and every aspect of our properties, making sure that we develop environmentally-friendly buildings with a low impact.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more about what we are doing in this important area.
