Is There a ‘You’ Way of Doing Things? I had a really interesting conversation earlier this week with a consultant. One of the topics that came up, which I thought was great food for thought, was: What is the ‘Unorthodox way of doing things’? Not in the sense of the work we produce or even the branding and the way we present ourselves. It was more from the standpoint of culture, goals, day-to-day working practices, and the overall approach we take to everything, based on the long-term vision of the kind of company we want to work at and build. I thought this was some great insight that has had me stewing over some ideas since. But it also made me think about how many businesses, in general, don’t consider this. Personally, I have seen both sides of the coin. I’ve worked at businesses with great cultures and at businesses with not-so-good, some would say toxic cultures. In reflection, every time, it has been a result of how seriously this question was taken on a day-to-day basis. The ability to make decisions based on a common vision and outlook that all decision makers are bought into for how you want to live your working life, informing every decision you make, is massive. For me, it was a huge priority when bringing people into the team at Unorthodox to cultivate the culture we want to have, which I believe I’ve touched on before on here. But to take this approach into all areas of the business—from accounting to project management systems, terms negotiations, and everything in between—is something I’m going to be implementing a lot moving forward! For anyone else who wants to refresh their approach (freelancers or companies), a tip I was given was to write out my general thoughts on a piece of paper for 10 minutes in a monologue style. Don’t worry about punctuation, spelling, etc., as it’s just for you. The purpose is more about splurging your thoughts onto a page and having a base to inform and feed the vision you have that you might not even realize. Have a go! The mission of Inclusive Change Ltd is Building the Future of Work with Neurodiversity in mind. This last week I have come to realise that while people are talking about future careers, jobs that haven't been invented yet and different ways of working there is are job's that no-one yet has realised will be on that list of "jobs in 2030". That is "Neurodiversity Enabler" (the name doesn't fill me with joy but we can work on that) - the role can be virtual or in person and will be working alongside talented neurodivergent employees and their teams to enable all team members to thrive at work, overcome barriers and develop high performing teams. We already provide support through Inclusive Change to clients and I know there are companies and businesses that are doing great things around this. But I can see an urgent need to upskill and train people to take on these roles. Workplaces are going to need more people to understand neurodiversity, through lived experience and can also navigate the world of work and management in diverse organisations or self employment. This is no easy task and in true change manager fashion I see this as a change project which is going to need some people to step up and get things started. So in October I will be launching an online course with Kate Brewer to help upskill virtual assistants in working with neurodivergent clients. I've been quiet!
