Smashi Business’ Post

Paul Graham recently coined the term Founder Mode, distinguishing it from the traditional Manager Mode used by many company leaders. According to Graham, Founder Mode emphasizes a founder's deep, hands-on involvement in their company's operations, contrasting with the more detached, hierarchical approach of Manager Mode. He suggests that founders often feel pressured to adopt Manager Mode as their startups scale, which can harm their companies. In Founder Mode, founders stay closer to the details, directly engaging with teams at all levels. This can lead to faster decision-making and more authentic leadership, as seen with founders like Steve Jobs. Graham argues that while Founder Mode might not yet be fully defined, it offers a more effective way to scale a company by allowing founders to retain control over the company's vision and culture.
