🌟 From Account Manager to Vice President of Sales: Raymond Tieman’s Epic Journey
In the world of sustainability and innovation, climbing the career ladder isn’t just about showing up—it’s about showing up with heart. At Smartvatten, we’re thrilled to shine a spotlight on Raymond Tieman, who’s gone from Account Manager to Vice President of Sales faster than you can say “water efficiency.” 💧
When Raymond joined us four years ago, he hit the ground running—and hasn’t stopped since. Whether it’s doubling revenue in the Benelux region or mentoring teammates, he’s proof that hard work, curiosity, and a healthy dose of humor can take you far.
Raymond’s leadership is built on three pillars:
1️⃣ Collaboration: Building a Supportive Team
2️⃣ Expertise: Cultivating a “Learn-it-All” Approach
3️⃣ Enthusiasm: Bringing Energy to Purposeful Work
💬 “If someone has a new idea, I encourage them to explore it. They may stumble, but that’s part of learning. In the end, it’s about fostering a supportive environment where growth can happen naturally.”
From mentoring rising stars to navigating the occasional office mishap (we’ll save those stories for another post), Raymond has shown that leadership is about lifting others up—and having fun along the way.
👉 Stay curious. Collaborate boldly. And don’t forget to hydrate. 💧

Not everyone thrives in a managerial role
https://lnkd.in/gqRrVWqC
Key takeaways from the article:
* Mismatched promotions: Many talented individuals are promoted to management roles that don't suit their strengths, leading to frustration and missed potential.
* Focus on coaching, not paperwork: Middle managers should spend less time on administrative tasks and more time developing their teams.
* Clear career paths: Organizations need to offer well-defined career paths with advancement opportunities outside of just management.
* Rethink promotion criteria: Promotions should consider leadership skills and interest in managing, not just past performance.
* Empower middle managers: Invest in training and support to help middle managers thrive in their roles.

90% of senior people in marketing, sales AND customer success get this wrong...
Here's some advice I've given to multiple people that want to make the step up from expert individual contributor to management/leadership.
To make your next step, you're going to have to break the pattern that has gotten you to where you are now.
Your next step will not be achieved through a course, or your next set of hard skills.
Put simply, you will have to do something that you haven't done before (and that can be scary).
If you want to move from IC to leadership (and you truly want the job, not just the title), then you have to start showcasing leadership.
How do you do that:
- communicate proactively
- report on what you're doing and how it contributes to the business
- celebrate milestones, especially if they're others' achievements
- show how the organization could improve
- continue to consistently hit your own KPIs (lead by example)
- demonstrate coördination skills: take up a new project that involves delegation, not execution, for you, to show that you can do it.
- ...
This requires:
- confidence. Get exercising, improve your self-talk, turn on that playlist for your commute that helps you get there.
- self-discipline. Hold yourself accountable to your goals
Once you get started, you'll find other ways to show you can be a manager or even a leader.
Even if you don't get that position at your current company or team, you can now confidently say that you have actually done the work - setting yourself up perfectly for your next step.
Most growth and career progress does not come from acquiring hard skills. The truth is you'll learn those on the job.
With the right mentality and soft skills + working in your "zone of genius," you can get almost anywhere.
If I read "proven track record" or "results-driven" one more time...I’m gonna
🤯 Well, not really 😂...but it's hard not to scroll past them because so many LinkedIn bios say the same thing (free alternative ideas below - keep reading)!
These corporate buzzwords have been used so often they have no meaning. They don’t stand out. They don’t say anything, and they're forgettable. I remember leading a project for an event where my job was to edit 75+ executive bios, and you know what? Less than five were worthy of remembrance if I took the names off them. Not because the leader wasn’t great at their job, but because their words weren’t.
If you don't know what else to say in your bio or on your profile, here are some ideas to hurdle over the noise and stand out. PLEASE STEAL THEM and make them yours!
-"I simplify chaotic projects, break down roadblocks, and get teams across the finish line ahead of schedule."
-"I cut 30% of wasted time by slashing unnecessary meetings and automating routine status updates."
-"I consistently lead teams to hit 120% of quarterly revenue targets by finding overlooked markets or streamlining underused sales channels."
-"I spot untapped potential in teams and processes, turning overlooked ideas into strategies that boost margins by 10-15%."
-"I turn underperforming teams into top achievers by overhauling how they prioritize daily goals and delegate tasks."
I hope you found this helpful!
Looking back on my tenure as a sales executive at Africa's largest energy firm, transparency stood out as the bedrock of our success. Amidst the bustling offices and dynamic sales and operations units, I witnessed firsthand the profound impact of open communication and honesty in leadership. Our team flourished under the guidance of managers who not only set clear goals but also shared candid insights into the industry's challenges and opportunities.
In navigating the high-pressure environment, I came to realize that transparency wasn't merely a management strategy; it was a pervasive culture infusing every facet of our work. Whether discussing market trends or addressing customer concerns, open dialogue fueled collaboration and innovation. This culture of transparency didn't just bolster the company's bottom line; it fostered a deep sense of unity and purpose among colleagues, propelling us to achieve remarkable results together.
While effective leadership hinges on transparency, it's crucial to recognize that this responsibility extends beyond managers alone—it's a shared commitment. Empowering employees to openly share their thoughts, concerns, and ideas fosters proactive issue resolution, constructive feedback, and collaborative problem-solving. Let's rally behind transparency in our management practices to cultivate stronger, more cohesive teams that thrive collectively.
And on a lighter note, while we champion transparency, let's not forget that Real Madrid retains its status as the pinnacle of football greatness.
Here's to an amazing week ahead, filled with productivity and success.
Stay Jiggy! ❤️
I've had a number of managers with very different leadership and people management skills.
I benefitted different things from each.
Some recognized my natural ability to lead outside of "title" roles, and so embraced that strong agency and autonomy with responsibility and organization exposure. I strive under that.
Some, recognized the inherent systemic and systematic shortcomings in an organization, created a buffer by creating ecosystems of order and big picture clarity, even amidst chaos, and that allowed me to focus on needle shifting priorities, which would drive effectiveness and efficiencies for investment of resources - time, money, effort.
Some, recognizing that Young Black Gifted talent is structurally disenfranchised in this corporate spaces, is not an enabler but a defender to ensure you are remunerated, recognized and rewarded competitively and relatively to external market rates.
Some, explained to me not just how to tell time, but how a watch works, and made all the world of difference when the mechanics of the machine are made clear.
I am grateful and thankful for every manager I've had for their contribution to my career journey thus far. Nothing was the same.
For the teams I've had the privilege and honour in leading, whether external partners like agencies, or strategists I've supported in propelling them from good to great, the journey is never linear, and there's no manual for this.
Managers should advocate, support, and recognise in tangible terms. Adapt to your team and not expect them to adapt to you.
To use the parenting adage, as a parent myself, is to love each child as they need to be loved. That is to say, the development and career needs of two team members can never be identical.
Treat each as no-fungible one-of-one, because it is. Lean into what and who people are already, and usher them into their greatness.
Leadership is servanthood. Leadership is empathy. It is selflessness. It is transparent and truth. It is a pledge to a higher cause, a more noble pursuit of doing the right thing, even when it is not the easy thing.
May all those called upon it in every sphere, at work, in civil society, in the superstructure of community like schools, church, forums, and the like, truly be lead by the Batho Pele principles.

Think back to the best manager you’ve ever had...
What made them stand out?
Was it the way they cleared obstacles before you even noticed them?
How they balanced the big picture with the day to day details?
Or maybe it was their ability to empower you to focus on what you do best.
I often think about this as a Sales Manager:
- Am I creating clarity or adding noise?
- Am I spotting and fixing issues early enough for my team to stay in their zone?
- Am I balancing strategy with execution?
The best managers don’t just lead, they enable. They create an environment where their team can thrive and win with customers.
Who was your best manager, and why? Let’s give them some love today!
🔑 Key Account Management Simplified 🔑
Key account management is often surrounded by numerous opinions and varied approaches.
As a result, it can quickly become complex to administer, especially at a team level.
At our organization, we use a straightforward approach that ensures consistency across the board when managing our most valuable Customers.
Here are 3 simple yet effective steps we recommend to help make your program scalable and repeatable:
1️⃣ Set a Clear, Consistent Agenda
Ensure every meeting follows a similar structure. This consistency helps your Customers know exactly what to expect and improves alignment and communication across your team.
2️⃣ Streamline Information Sharing
Capture information in a standardised manner that allows for seamless sharing across your team. For the leader it becomes far easier to stay up to date with accounts and fosters learning through the consistent method of comm's across team members.
3️⃣ Implement Simple, Consistent Communication
A clear and consistent communication process (that's how we share the information we have captured), ensures everyone understands the impact of each interaction on both the Customer and the business. Get it right, and you'll see improved outcomes for all parties.
When implemented, these steps will streamline your key account management and drive real results! 🚀
