As part of Carlos Gemora's work with affordable housing strategies, Sites Southwest is researching and discussing planning/zoning policies and working with policymakers around the state to create new models to discuss key issues in this area such as helping local jurisdictions, especially rural communities, with organization, management, and vision. What are the most important affordable housing strategies you think local jurisdictions should adopt?
Relaxing or revisiting regs for housing above commercial storefronts and offices. Or providing low cost easy to access financing for second, third, etc. story renovations into housing.
Build public housing
ADUs: they provide small scale, incremental units owned (for the most part) by local residents, providing income to overcome housing affordability gap and opportunity for multigenerational housing. Development of ADUs should be by right, with no penalties/low barriers. Jurisdictions should require 20% (min) of all SFH development to have ADUs and maybe/even require them to be built at time of development to further reduce costs.
