How can Labour make mission-driven government a reality? 📕 A new discussion paper from Demos highlights the need for long-term decision making and stronger collaboration between business and government. To achieve this, the paper advocates for reforms to the Companies Act, echoing the Better Business Act’s call for an amendment to Section 172 of the Companies Act, to ensure company directors align social and environmental impact with shareholder returns. 🤝 As the new government embraces its "mission-driven" approach, it’s clear that achieving its goals will require deep partnerships with the private sector. By leveraging the expertise and resources of businesses, we can deliver the missions that benefit society as a whole. But it’s a two-way street. For these partnerships to succeed: 1️⃣ Businesses must prioritise collaboration and wider societal interests. 2️⃣ Government needs to adopt a more deliberative and long-term approach to policy-making.
