Today is #BetterBusinessDay – celebrating the trailblazers and innovators shaping a world where business can be a force for good. 📣 The Post Office, P&O and many other high profile corporate scandals have made clear that the current model of business – where making profit for shareholders is prioritised – is broken. To help solve the urgent problems facing society today, all businesses need to be empowered to think beyond profit, and create solutions to the social, environmental and economic crises we face. Introducing the Better Business Act. The #BetterBusinessAct calls for an amendment to Section 172 of the Companies Act, which sets out the ‘job description’ for company directors to ensure they align social and environmental impact with shareholder returns. This small change in the law will make a big change in the world, allowing businesses to make decisions in all of our long-term interests. A coalition of over 2,700 businesses are backing this change. We asked six of these supportive business leaders to help spread the word and make the pitch for better business – now it’s over to you. Time to elevate your voice and support the #BetterBusinessAct👇 ✍️ Join the movement for better business today by signing up to support the #BetterBusiness Act – https://lnkd.in/dtiQYz8 🗣️Already a supporter? Better Business Act
Non-profit Organization Management
The Better Business Act will transform the way we do business.
About us
The world needs business at its best - helping to fix urgent problems like climate change and inequality. The Better Business Act would transform the way Britain does business so that every single company takes ownership of its social and environmental impact. At a time when we face many urgent challenges, we want to change the law so that it is no longer an option for business to pursue profit at the expense of workers, communities and the environment. By amending Section 172 of the Companies Act, we will update the job description for company directors, making it their responsibility to protect people and the planet at the same time as pursuing profit. We know that a majority of directors want this too. The amendment would provide a firm legal basis for directors to advance the interests of society and the environment alongside those of shareholders. This would in turn provide a clear framework for business to engage with the many existing initiatives that seek to drive up standards. A small change in the law will make a big change in the world. It will allow businesses to make decisions in all of our long term interests, helping to create a fairer, greener future for all.

As 2024 draws to a close, we’re celebrating the collective milestones of the Better Business Act coalition and reflecting on a year filled with progress. 🚀 This year saw business scandals like The Post Office Ltd and water companies underscore the urgent need for reform, while government leaders emphasised the value of partnership with businesses to address today’s urgent challenges. The Better Business Act coalition has stepped up to align with the growing expectation for business to act as a force for good. Here's a snapshot of what we’ve achieved together: 📌 Influencing policy and celebrating early wins for the new government, including Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, The Rt Hon Steve Reed OBE MP, advocating for water companies to place customers and the environment at the heart of their objectives. We’ve strengthened cross-party support through party conferences and meetings with MPs across the spectrum. 📌 Engaging leaders and amplifying voices through impactful events, such as Better Business Day panels in Liverpool and London featuring Vince Cable, Holly Branson, and Josephine Philips. 📌 At Louder Than Words – the UK’s largest gathering of purpose-driven businesses – our co-chair Mary Portas OBE delivered a standout keynote, with systems change as the central theme woven throughout the two-day festival. 📌 Securing great media coverage, recent highlights include our campaign director, Chris Turner’s letter in the Financial Times, an FT interview with our co-chair and Tony's Chocolonely CEO Douglas Lamont, and climate tech founder Tessa Clarke profiled in Sifted. 📌 Growing our coalition to nearly 3,000 businesses and reaching 48,000+ views on our Better Business Day campaign video with Nice and Serious. 👉 Dive into the full story and discover how we’re building momentum for 2025: https://lnkd.in/eRqnVKfk Thank you to our incredible coalition members, partners, and supporters; your dedication has propelled us forward in 2024 and we can't wait to continue working together next year. #BetterBusinessAct #BBA #SystemsChange

Better Business Act coalition member Olio • Share More, Waste Less continues to partner with major retailers to tackle UK food waste, recently adding Boots UK to their roster. Their latest partnership with the UK’s leading health and beauty retailer will enable Boots UK stores across the country to support local communities by redistributing food which would otherwise end up in landfill. 📣The Better Business Act wants to see all UK businesses creating solutions to the urgent challenges we face, advancing the interests of people and the planet alongside profit. That’s what makes Beautiful Business”. – Mary Portas OBE, co-chair of the Better Business Act. Today, we’re taking a look back at Louder Than Words – The B Corp festival, where Mary kicked things off with an inspiring keynote speech which you can watch now at the link below. ‘The business adoption of climate solutions isn’t happening because shareholder returns reign supreme — and it’s always cheaper to deplete the planet, than protect it … Which leaves us all stuck in a horrible stalemate. A stalemate that can only be broken by addressing the root causes of poverty; by redefining business success to give equal priority to people, planet and profit (the Better Business Act would be a great starting point).’ Coalition supporter and Olio • Share More, Waste Less cofounder, Tessa Clarke, shares her five mistakes not to make as a climate tech founder with Sifted. At a time when we face many urgent challenges, Tessa underscores the critical need to rewrite the rules of businesses, ensuring that prioritising profit at the expense of workers, communities, and the environment is no longer an option. Can doing good also mean doing well in business? The Better Business Act believe it can and Tony's Chocolonely is the perfect proof. In a recent episode of Uncensored CMO, our campaign co-chair, Douglas Lamont, shares how at Tony's Chocolonely, their mission drives their success, showing that purpose and profitability can go hand in hand. We believe doing the right thing should be the norm for all businesses – not just the exceptional ones. At a time when we face many urgent challenges, we want to change the law so that it is no longer an option for business to pursue profit at the expense of workers, communities and the environment. We need to see all UK businesses acting a a force for good. This is why the Better Business Act is calling for an amendment to Section 172 of the Companies Act, which sets out the ‘job description’ for company directors to ensure they align social and environmental impact with shareholder returns. Tony's Chief Chocolonely on why a good business can also be a successful business There is a lot of talk about Purpose and whether it's possible to combine that with being commercially successful One company that knows exactly how to do that is one of my favourite brands Tony's Chocolonely Their CEO (Chief Chocolonely) has experience of doing that having previously led Innocent for 15 years scaling it up from €200m to €500m In this episode of Uncensored CMO we get into the purpose & commercial success of their business and why both can work together (whilst chatting in front of a wall of Chocolate obviously!) Some of the things we discussed 🍫 Why Tony's mission came first and the chocolate second 🍫 The truth about the Cocoa supply chain and being 'slavery free' 🍫 Why the founders got arrested to make a point 🍫 The dilemmas they face when trying to do right by the entire category 🍫 How they handle the cost disadvantage of paying a living wage 🍫 Making the transition from crazy start-up to serious market leader 🍫 The challenge of going international and learning how to scale 🍫 The big Walmart listing that tested how serious they were about the US 🍫 Which values ensure the team are set up for success 🍫 Why process is your friend when trying to scale up 🍫 The big lessons from 15 years spent leading Innocent post acquisition by Coke This is part 1 of a 2 part series on Tony's and next week I will be releasing an episode talking about how they manage the brand with their 'Dean of Dopeness' Sadira E.
