Did you know that last week was National Volunteer Week? Neither did I! But now that I do, I want to give an anonymous shout out to all of the amazing volunteers and charitable organisations that I have had the pleasure to work with over the past-many years. Your mahi matters to me. And while I'm here - a few insights I can share from some of this work: 1 - Volunteers don't do it for the recognition. But, they do want to feel appreciated 2 - There is no single way to show appreciation for your volunteers in a way that will universally "land well". Sadly, misjudged expressions of appreciation sometimes do more harm than good 3 - The best way to get it right, is to understand your volunteers deeply, and have a well-stocked toolkit that your volunteer-managers can dig into to show authentic and well-considered appreciation on a case-by-case basis PM me if you want to know more about the research to support these insights, or how you can check whether the frameworks and approaches you have in place will land well with your volunteers. #NVW2024 #TheBigShoutOut

Celebrating Dedicated Educators: A Tribute During New Zealand's National Volunteer Week As we celebrate National Volunteer Week in New Zealand, we extend our gratitude to the remarkable teachers who volunteer within the Networks of Expertise (NEX). This special week, from June 16-22, recognises the incredible contributions of volunteers nationwide, highlighting their invaluable impact on our communities. NEX are focussed on fostering professional growth and collaboration among educators. Each NEX relies heavily on the dedication and commitment of volunteer educators who generously share their time, skills, and knowledge to support their peers, promote best practices, and enhance the overall quality of education in New Zealand. The theme of National Volunteer Week is “Time to Shine – He wā pīataata.” Our NEX volunteers focus on helping other teachers and colleagues to grow and shine, making a profound difference in the lives of their students. However, this week it is fitting to shine a light on our NEX volunteers, as their service exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism, and demonstrates how collective effort can lead to significant, positive changes in education. We are immensely grateful for the support and dedication of our teacher volunteers in the Networks of Expertise. 🌍 Celebrating International Volunteer Day 2024 🌟 Today, I reflect on how volunteering has shaped me both personally and professionally. This isn’t about showing off but about inspiring others to explore the immense rewards of giving back. For the past 5 years, I’ve volunteered as a mountain guide with the German Alpine Association, helping people gain confidence in the mountains 🏔️, connect with nature, and rejuvenate. At #VMware, where community was part of the company’s values, I’ve contributed to meaningful projects like: - Supporting the Malala Fund in their technology transformation 💻. - Promoting digital literacy at JWOK Cambodia 📚. - Delivering STEM learning at Havre Public Schools in rural USA 🎓. Additionally, I’ve led tree-planting efforts with #Bergwaldprojekt 🌲🌳 and fostered inclusion as a regional lead for Women@VMware 🌈. Volunteering has taught me lessons far beyond management training—resilience, empathy ❤️, and the power of collective action 🤝. Most importantly, it’s shown me that volunteering isn’t just about giving back; it’s about gaining new perspectives and creating opportunities for everyone, including yourself. ✨ It’s easier than you think to lean in and make a difference!
