D&I Tip of the Day: It is an oxymoron to state that DEI lowers or softens the standards. Why? DEI increases competition because opportunities are equally available to everyone. With more people in the pool, organizations are faced with selecting the best from a wider variety of highly skilled and educated individuals. No university can thrive by admitting students who will not succeed, nor can employers survive by choosing the worst individuals to lead and/or serve its stakeholders in a knowledge plus experience economy. With more competition, it is necessary for employees to continually upskill, reskill, and cross-skill to gain an advantage in a fair and inclusive work environment. DEI learning, then, must emphasize the acquisition of 21st Century skills that will help employees remain competitive, and aid organizations in their quest for future success.

Experiential learning is critical. If we want a sustainable future, we need to equip learners with both sustainability skills and practice using those skills in real-world settings.

The Edinburgh Award is a skills development programme run by staff across the University to help students to make the most of co- and extra-curricular activities they are involved with. The Award provides recognition for students' involvement but also supports them to build self-awareness and work towards developing their skills and abilities within their role or activity. Earning CriteriaStudents undertake the Award at the same time as doing this co or extra-curricular activity. All students undertake at least 50 learning hours during their time on the Award while also working on their personal development. I completed 31 hours of skills training, 61 hours of impact activities, 6 hours of input sessions and 3 hours of coaching sessions with my Edinburgh Award coaching.Students submit formal reflections half-way through and at the end of their time on the Award, reflecting on the progress of three skills (I chose Analytical Thinking, Written Communication, Verbal and Presentation Skills) they select at the beginning of their Award journey and on the positive impact they are having/have had on others. They will also submit a self-rating against a list of locally determined Graduate Attributes at each of the three Award stages. Choosing a business school aligned with diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) principles can help future-proof your career in today’s job market. Learnings from Day 4 of the bridging program by ACCES Employment in conjunction with Humber College- 1. First Impressions Matter: People constantly form perceptions. When entering a room, focus on making a strong presence, appearing credible, and leaving a lasting impact. 2. Teach People How to Treat You: As Markus Van Aardt says, "YOU teach people how to treat YOU." How we allow others to treat us shapes our interactions. 3.
