We have published our pilot Online Learning Rankings 2024 – the first attempt to measure online learning on a global basis. Unlike other THE rankings that use rank position and scores, the OLR 2024 groups institutions into three categories: gold, silver and bronze. Fifty-six universities across 28 countries or territories gain one of these awards, while a further 64 institutions are listed as reporters. Demand for online learning has exploded in recent years, but there is no global standard on how to measure the teaching quality of higher education delivered online - let alone agreement on the definition of online learning. While the results and the underlying data provide interesting insights, they also contribute to an important global conversation about how best to assess and understand online learning. The gold-awarded universities in the THE Online Learning Rankings 2024 are (in alphabetical order): American University, United States Arizona State University (Tempe), United States Higher School of Economics University, Russia Manav Rachna Educational Institutions (International Institute of Research and Studies), India Massey University, New Zealand O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) Jindal Global University, India University of Central Florida, United States University of Essex, United Kingdom University of Liverpool, United Kingdom University of South Australia, Australia University of Szeged, Hungary View the full results here: https://lnkd.in/evrmWRMz THE's data team is planning to consult on the OLR in early 2025 to improve the approach and methodology for future years. My work affords me many great privileges - and here’s me asking a Nobel laureate about levitating frogs and the vital importance of freedom and playfulness in science. Physicist Andre Geim won the 2000 Ig Nobel Prize for his seemingly bizarre work on levitating frogs using magnets before winning the 2010 The Nobel Prize for physics for his work on graphine. At the Times Higher Education World Academic Summit at the The University of Manchester in October he told me that the whole scientific pyramid would come crashing down without the foundations of fundamental research. #THEWAS

A hugely impactful 2024 for us culminated one month ago with the launch of the Times Higher Education Interdisciplinary Science Rankings, in association with Schmidt Science Fellows. The Rankings, the largest Rankings debut in Times Higher’s history, will accelerate global progress in interdisciplinary research by championing best practice wherever it is found and by highlighting the approaches that are driving success. This unique data and analysis is the latest initiative in pursuit of our mission: To change how science is done. Aligned with the launch, the Interdisciplinary Science Forum in Washington DC. brought together an influential international audience to discuss the “how” of interdisciplinary science. Expert panels explored key issues, including interdisciplinary leadership, measurement and metrics, career paths, and institutional models. As our Executive Director Dr. Megan Kenna told Forum delegates: “True change will be driven by leaders, visionaries, and institutions willing to invest in bold ideas. By funders who prioritize impact over convention. By educators training the next generation to think across disciplines and act with urgency.” Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the first Interdisciplinary Science Ranking and to all those who brought ideas, challenge, and perspectives to the Interdisciplinary Science Forum. We are committed to strengthening this growing community of interdisciplinary support across the globe and throughout 2025 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/dBiVuqtj

UK university mergers and take-overs will be a key focus of an “efficiency task force” developing “radical” proposals to encourage new ways of working in a sector mired in a financial crisis. Exploring “how AI is likely to transform teaching, research and operations” will also be a priority. Sir Nigel Carrington, a mergers and acquisitions lawyer and the former vice-chancellor of the University of the Arts London, has been appointed by Universities UK to lead the initiative that will outline the business cases for various forms of collaboration and new ways of generating income. Writing in Times Higher Education, Sir Nigel said “we are prepared to think radically about transformation to tackle the challenges we face” and that “all options” are “on the table”. What do you think needs to be done? Read THE’s news report here: https://lnkd.in/efBuHZy2 Read Sir Nigel’s article here: https://lnkd.in/e8sGNfAQ

Times Higher Education's final issue as a print magazine drops tomorrow. Eras end, reading habits change, business models evolve - but wrapping up a print run that began in 1971 has been poignant all the same. The first issue was unrecognisable from the final one – a yellow-hued jumble of stories. But the journalists behind the bylines – including editor Brian MacArthur and writers such as Christopher Hitchens – were on to something. A sector as vibrant and essential to the health of the nation needed serious coverage: sharp analysis that combined critical independence with unshakeable support for what universities do. Fifty-three years later, that is still our goal – and it will remain so as we move on into a post-print future. Today, THE is a business with a broad remit to support universities with its expertise, data and audiences around the world. That dual mission: to inform higher education audiences in a rich variety of ways, and to connect them so they can deliver for people, places and the planet is a new mission statement, but in many ways not so new to a business that has always sought to do both through our journalism. As we bid farewell to the magazine format, I'm incredibly proud of what the wonderful editorial team have produced week in week out for my 13 years as editor, but also of the part we have played in THE's evolution. It's been an amazing transformation, taking us from print to digital, from a UK focus to worldwide coverage for a global audience, building new institutional subscription models, and new editorial formats such as Campus to lift-up and improve communities of professional practice. Perhaps most significant has been the part that editorial plays in supporting everything else that the THE of 2025 does - its world-leading events, the transformational data and insights that empower universities to improve, and the array of other ways in which we work with institutions, industry and government. So for me, this week is a moment to salute where we have come from and bid farewell to print, but also celebrate the part THE plays in the higher education sector now and into the future. Our journalism will remain a crucial part of that. I also love that we have a wonderful Christmas story on the final cover with illustrations from the inimitable David Parkins, who has graced THE's page for decades. Can you spot the DeLorean?
