🎉 Happy International Women's Day! 🎉 Today, we celebrate the achievements of women in all spheres, including medicine. However, it's also a day to reflect on the ongoing challenges they face. A recent study highlights gender inequality in interventional pulmonology (IP), an area where women are still underrepresented, particularly in leadership roles. Key findings from the survey of 92 physicians across 17 countries: - 52% of respondents were women, showing a significant presence in the field. - Despite this, men continue to dominate bronchoscopy and research involvement. - Only 23% of leading positions are held by women, compared to 60% by men. - Gender discrimination was reported by 26.8% of women, compared to 5.3% of men. These statistics remind us of the importance of promoting gender diversity and equality in all professions, including medicine. Let's use this Women's Day to commit to breaking down barriers and creating more inclusive and equitable work environments. https://lnkd.in/gMM-rVVF #InternationalWomensDay #GenderEquality #Medicine #InterventionalPulmonology.

https://lnkd.in/dJiRqCqm Surgical options for gender confirmation represent a significant milestone in the journey of transgender individuals towards aligning their physical appearance with their gender identity. These procedures, often referred to as gender-affirming surgeries, aim to alleviate gender dysphoria and enhance the overall well-being and quality of life of transgender individuals. However, like any surgical procedure, they come with inherent risks and potential benefits that must be carefully considered.

Three years ago this month, I released an online talk on Unconscious Gender Bias in Ophthalmology and Medicine. Since then, it has resonated with the ophthalmic profession and spilled over into other areas of medicine, garnering over 10K+ views on various social media platforms. This week, the talk culminates into an instructional course at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) - the first major eye meeting to place this on the agenda. We thank them deeply for their support. If you're wondering what all the fuss is about, you can watch the video linked here and see if it resonates with you. If so, we hope this ASCRS course takes your understanding and power to the next level. Join the Instructional Course on Sunday April 7th 2024, 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM (BCEC - Meeting Level 1, Room 157AB) and become a Champion of Change alongside Drs Julie Schallhorn, MD, ABO; Arthur Cummings, MD; Brett Mueller, D.O., Ph.D. and Neda Nikpoor MD, ABO. Note: Our co-instructors' talks present astounding data, are non-judgemental, and most importantly, do not avoid the elephants in the room. We are here to have hard conversations in a safe space and offer evidence behind the why and how to create change - from academia to mentorship, from governmental policy to small business challenges. The idea is to have open, vulnerable, and meaningful discourse about the issue and make practical amendments to push for change at every level. Grassroots conversations are significant - and everyone can take part in that as a first step. We'd love your support, and we'd love to support you in this journey.

In this piece, Somer delves into the challenges faced across multiple facets – from recruitment to obtaining accurate diagnoses and treatments. While there is a glimmer of progress in women’s presence as scientists and policy change advocates, the goal of true gender equity is far from over. My journey in healthcare research began by working with older adults marginalized due to age and reduced mobility. This initial focus led to my first major research project conducted outside an academic framework: a study exploring the perceptions of older adults, their informal caregivers, and healthcare professionals on post-operative challenges following hip surgery. Older adults, much like LGBTQ+ populations, are often marginalized within our healthcare systems. In fact, some French LGBTQI organizations have recently added an "A" at the beginning of the acronym to represent “Agée,” which means older adults. This underscores the important intersection between aging and other identities when advocating for equitable access to healthcare. Today, my research primarily focuses on critical perspectives within healthcare concerning marginalized LGBTQ+ populations. However, this initial study on aging highlighted the vital need to address intra-, inter-, and extra-personal stressors that are frequently overlooked. It reinforced my belief that critical research must focus on those at the margins of healthcare systems, whether due to their sexual orientation, gender, age, or physical condition. This work was significant in the early stages of my professional career, and I am especially grateful to Christine Cohen, Louise Belanger, and Filipa Pereira for their unwavering support and guidance throughout this research journey. 📃
