🏳️⚧️ Transgender Awareness Week (Nov 13–19) 🏳️⚧️ Did you know? 99% of people do not regret transitioning (including gender-affirming surgeries, where applicable). For context: - Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty): Regret rates are much higher, between 10–20%. - Knee Replacement Surgery: Around 10–15% experience regret, often due to unmet expectations or complications. A trans person is someone whose gender doesn’t align with the one they were assigned at birth. Transitioning is an empowering step for many, with incredibly low regret rates. 💛 𝗔𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲: 𝗹𝗲𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲. 💛

📌 𝐏𝐒𝐀: 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐀𝐅𝐀𝐁 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐤𝐬—𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐲𝐧𝐚𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭. Let’s be real—no one enjoys going to the gynaecologist. It’s awkward, uncomfortable, and if you’re transgender like me, the added layer of 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐲𝐬𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚 can make it feel even worse… __________________ 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: 🔘𝐀𝐅𝐀𝐁 (Assigned Female at Birth) refers to anyone born with a uterus, ovaries, or other anatomy typically labelled female at birth. Even if you identify as transgender or non-binary, routine care like this is still necessary. 🔘𝐃𝐲𝐬𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚 is the deep discomfort or distress many transgender people experience when their body doesn’t align with their gender identity. This discomfort can make appointments like these feel daunting, but they’re vital. __________________ 🩺 Today, on the two-year anniversary of my surgery, I’m sharing this to encourage you not to delay your health screenings. Whether you’re trans, non-binary or cis, your health matters. In my case, I avoided the gynae for way too long, which led to a massive fibroid that could have been caught sooner with routine care. Instead of a less invasive laparoscopic procedure, I needed an open abdominal surgery. It was a tough lesson. But here’s the unexpected part: even though the surgery was extensive, it helped confirm something I had been grappling with at the time—whether I was ready to take the next steps in my transition. The sense of freedom I felt after the surgery—removing a part of my body that didn’t align with my identity—provided much needed deep clarity. A hysterectomy was never part of my transition goals, but it was as if my whole body breathed a sigh of relief. Many transgender people battle to find trans-informed healthcare providers. Not all doctors are trained or comfortable to work with trans patients. I was fortunate to have incredibly supportive and affirming healthcare professionals—even though I was still early in my transition—they made me feel safe, respected, and seen. Self-care means showing up for yourself, make that appointment. 💙 #LivingMyTruth30 | Day: 25/30 🏳️⚧️

Nice study by @UroRecon High prevalence of vaginal cavity remnants in transgender men undergoing neourethral stricture repair. 🔍 38% needed excision. 🔬 All contained vaginal epithelium. I prefer complete excision robotically with obliteration of vaginal canal with gracilis. https://lnkd.in/gAUYWXQk

Update: Surgery went well! She’s home recovering. We will know about next steps in the coming week or so. A behind closed door moment… Two weeks ago, my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. We are pretty sure it was caught early but this Thursday she will have a double mastectomy to make sure this is a battle she will never have to face again. Our past two weeks have consisted of shifting schedules, lots of tears, sleepless nights and holding hands while she navigates a tidal waves of emotions and lots of fear - the fear of surgery, “what-ifs”, what’s next and possible future setbacks. The photo below was taken moments before the oncologist appt this morning. She was exhausted from no sleep and I was there to make sure she remained calm from her heightened anxiety. LGBTQ+ couples face the same life challenges that many couples face, but there are added layers of challenge: finding respectful doctors, gender assumptions (like thinking my wife will appreciate pink robes and ribbons - she won’t), or calling the medical office on her behalf only to be asked if I am her daughter (and this was by our assigned patient advocate…rest assured we got a new one). If you are able, please take a moment to add my wife to your prayer list this week. And her message to you - get tested, do self exams and advocate for yourself because you know your body best. We could have been in a much worse situation had we not done all of the above!! For those who wonder what a “behind closed door” moment refers to, it’s my response to those who say that they don’t care what happens “behind closed doors”. This statement is often used by a proclaimed “ally” who wants to prove their support for LGBTQ+ people but falls short of fully understanding what a same-sex relationship looks like “behind closed doors,” as if all we do behind closed doors is…well you can figure out the rest…. It is my belief that the more we share these “behind closed door” moments the more we will be seen for who we are as humans and ordinary couples navigating life together.
