Welcome to the first edition of This Week At SALCS #TWAS 😊 We’ll be updating our followers with highlights of the goings on at SALCS over the past week, so here we go! • Congratulations to Steve Lucas - IT Infrastructure Director on completing and gaining the Ekahau ECSE design certification! • Our engineers are continuing a national cabling, LAN & WAN rollout. • Preparations continue for the annual charity golf day which goes ahead mid-June, we'll be supporting Positive Social • Engineers have been out and about carrying out Wi-Fi surveys. • PM’s & PMO’s are preparing for a national retail rollout which begins the pilot stage next week. • PM’s have been carrying out surveys throughout the UK. • Five tenders have been submitted, good luck guys! • An educational cabling project has now been completed in the West Midlands. #wifi #ekahau #ECSE #ekahauecse #datacabling #updates #projectmanagement #surveys #tenders #golf

I would love to hear thoughts on LFBs new approach to AFAs. My initial reaction is that this practice undermines the value of the system by requiring someone to report the fire. If nuisance alarms are the issue, then occupants and the fire service are better served by identifying the cause of the nuisance and remediating it. I’d rather see fines for nuisance alarms as they motivate the owner to fix the problem. While false alarms can be annoying, every response to an alarm (real or otherwise) is an opportunity for pre-planning, training, and community engagement.

Starting in October, we will stop attending AFAs in most commercial buildings between 7am-8:30pm, unless we receive a call reporting a fire. This includes office blocks, retail and industrial estates during daytime hours. We will continue to respond to AFAs in schools, residential buildings and many other types of buildings at all times. The design of public infrastructure – such as public transportation systems – can significantly impact users, not only physically and socially but also mentally, affecting anxiety levels and perceptions of safety. A recent article uses the example of Philadelphia’s SEPTA transit system and discusses how despite efforts to increase ridership, such as infrastructure improvements and safety measures, anxiety remains a challenge.
