In his powerful new book, Recipes for Connection, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy highlights how food brings communities together, with farmers' markets playing a key role in building social bonds. Research backs this up—farmers' markets encourage connection, spark learning, support local economies, and even help resolve conflicts. They’re more than markets—they’re community hubs! 👩🏻🌾 👨🏽🌾 🥕 Next time you visit a farmers' market, take a moment to connect with a vendor, share a recipe, or just soak in the sense of community. Let’s make these spaces thrive! As 2024 draws to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the intersections of health, sustainability, and the built environment that have shaped this year. It’s been a privilege to engage with these issues through my work with Center for Active Design and Fitwel Certification System, and I wanted to share five compelling articles that highlight key themes that resonated with me over this past year. 🏢 The Case for Healthy Buildings. The 2024 Healthy Buildings Barometer underscores how sustainable building practices are no longer a luxury but a necessity for health and well-being. As the demand for healthier spaces grows, we see the transformative potential of thoughtful design on both human and planetary health. Enjoyed this overview of the Healthy Buildings Barometer from World Economic Forum https://bit.ly/4gvP6xc ✒️ Policy as a Health Catalyst: If enacted, policies like congestion pricing can drive meaningful health and equity outcomes. Insights from Center for Active Design into these initiatives demonstrate how cities can prioritize people over cars, fostering healthier, more equitable urban environments. https://bit.ly/3Dqhy4X 🏡 Tackling the Affordable Housing Crisis: The housing crisis is a pressing issue that affects health and well-being across the U.S, and around the world. This article on Kalamazoo, a city I know and love because it's where my mom grew up, highlights the challenges—and the opportunities for innovative solutions—to ensure everyone has access to stable, affordable homes. https://bit.ly/49Os5Tm 👯 The Power of Partnerships: Unique collaborations, such as hospitals investing in affordable housing, show how cross-sector partnerships can make a tangible difference in communities. These efforts remind me that impactful change often requires thinking outside traditional silos. I found the partnerships featured in this article especially compelling given the work I participated in at Center for Active Design several years ago exploring how the healthcare industry could support the development of high quality affordable housing thanks to funding from The Kresge Foundation Article: https://bit.ly/3ZLGyep CfAD Report: https://bit.ly/3ZO97Yw 🌳 More Trees, Fewer Cars: Paris’ ambitious climate plan to replace parking spaces with trees is an impactful step toward addressing urban heat, reducing emissions, and creating healthier public spaces. Nature-based solutions like these highlight the importance of integrating green infrastructure into urban planning, and just another reason Paris continues to inspire. https://bit.ly/3P8jyBd Each of these stories emphasizes the role of collaboration, innovation, and bold action in creating a healthier, more sustainable world. I’m inspired by the progress we’ve made and look forward to continuing this work towards a healthier future in the year ahead. #HealthyBuildings, #Sustainability, #AffordableHousing, #UrbanPlanning

Did you know that improving indoor air quality isn’t just a health imperative—it’s also a major economic driver? Research shows that Better #IAQ can: ⏰ Boost Productivity: Clean air improves cognitive function and reduces absenteeism, leading to measurable gains in performance. 🏥 Reduce Healthcare Costs: Fewer airborne pollutants mean fewer respiratory illnesses, allergy triggers, and overall health complications, saving millions in healthcare expenses. 💰 Enhance Real Estate Value: Buildings with superior IAQ are increasingly in demand. Tenants prioritize spaces that safeguard their health, leading to higher occupancy rates and rents. 🌱 Support ESG Goals: Prioritizing IAQ aligns with sustainability and social responsibility frameworks, attracting investors who value healthier, more sustainable built environments. Let’s start treating indoor air quality not as a cost but as a critical driver of health, equity, and economic success. What steps are you taking to prioritize clean air in your spaces? Let’s discuss! #IndoorAirQuality #HealthAndProductivity #Sustainability #ESG #CleanAir #BuildingBetter

🌳 The Power of Trees: Climate, Health, and Equity Did you know trees are some of our most effective tools in combating #climatechange and a powerful force for promoting #publichealth? 🌿 🌡️ Cooling cities: Urban tree coverage naturally lowers temperatures, providing essential relief during heat waves. 🌍 Carbon capture: Trees absorb carbon dioxide, directly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. 💚 Improving well-being: Exposure to greenery reduces stress, enhances mental health, and elevates quality of life. Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, $1.5 billion is being invested in urban forestry initiatives! This unprecedented funding will help create greener, healthier, and more resilient cities, with a focus on supporting communities that need it most. At CfAD, we’re thrilled to see these greening efforts take root and are eager to witness their long-term impact on climate, health, and equity. 📖 Learn more about how cities like #Louisville are pioneering urban tree planting from Bloomberg: https://ow.ly/U2TG50Uk3t8 Let’s grow a healthier future together. 🌳✨ #ClimateAction #HealthyBuildings #UrbanForestry
