The jump-scare in a horror film. Your child’s first step. Some things can make your heart skip a beat. But most of the time, you want your heart to keep a steady rhythm like a world-famous drummer. AFib is a condition that causes an irregular heart rhythm — the amateur drummer that’s a bit off beat. Sure, it sounds a bit off, but is it really a problem? If left untreated, AFib puts you at risk for having a stroke. AFib can come and go. Some people only experience it for a few minutes to a few hours, while others have it persistently. Not everyone with AFib notices symptoms, which is why it’s good to have regular check-ups with your primary care provider. Some symptoms include: • A fast, fluttering or pounding heartbeat • Chest pain • Dizziness or lightheadedness • Extreme tiredness • Shortness of breath If you experience any of these, talk to your healthcare provider. They may refer you to see a heart specialist called a cardiologist. If you experience chest pain, seek emergency care right away. 🌍 What is Severe ME again? Today, a physiotherapist visited me. Though she’s worked with the most severe illnesses, she burst into tears outside my room after our session. Even with preparation, seeing someone so extremely emaciated who could barely whisper was overwhelming. I had to heavily medicate myself just to tolerate another person’s presence. This wasn’t even traditional physiotherapy - just gentle touches on my feet and calves where I have pain. The reality of #MECFS is something the vast majority of MDs struggles to understand. During our brief interaction, she asked if I could sit up briefly or watch videos etc.. I had to deny everything. Having no contact with anyone except my aunt, it was shocking to see her horrified face as she processed my reality. She was devastated learning that doctors can’t help & there’s barely any research funding. I’ve been living in the most severe state for 4 years - and let me tell you, a few months of crash doesn’t begin to reflect what life with extremely severe ME/CFS truly is. The profound isolation, inability to tolerate light, sound, or human presence, extreme muscle loss, constant pain - it’s a level of suffering that’s hard to describe. Even the smallest movements are impossible. You’re grateful when you can manage liquid nutrition. And there are people even more severely affected than me. This disease strips away everything, leaving you in a state that challenges the very definition of living. The medical community must acknowledge the devastating reality of #MECFS We need urgent research and treatment. We are young people who have disappeared from life and many of us are too ill to even share our stories. @GlimmerInAbsnce on X https://lnkd.in/edfRMSsq

Effective communication between patients and providers is crucial for safe & quality care, yet it's often fraught with challenges. Beyond explaining medical jargon clearly and with sensitivity, providers have to navigate emotionally charged situations and complex family dynamics, especially when dealing with serious illness. I came across this interesting article that provides a list of "never-words," which are words and phrases that should be avoided by the providers, and their alternatives. https://lnkd.in/eQrcdSC4 Examples: Never-word: "NEED" Instead of saying: “Your mother needs a transplant.” Try: “Here's what I see. Let's discuss options.” Never-word: "JUST" Instead of saying: "We can continue treatment, or we can just do supportive care" Omit the word "just" from the sentence. Others: “Everything will be fine.” "What would [the patient] want?" “Let's not worry about that now.” "You are lucky it is only stage 2" Lastly, it's always okay to say, “I’m sorry, that came out wrong. Would it be ok if I begin again?” #patientcommunication #providercommunication #patientengagement #patientfocus #neverwords #doctors #patients #communication #bedsidemanner #empathy #patientcentered #patientsafety #medicationsafety #medsafety #ilovemedsafety
