🔍💻 Hiring Developers: Coding Skills vs. English Skills 💼📝 Developers skilled in Python or Java may excel in coding but struggle with technical documentation in English. Here's the catch: 85% of software developers worldwide have learned English as a second language.🤔 This often leads to challenges in articulation and comprehension. But here's the kicker: Without clear technical documentation, team collaboration suffers.👩👩👦👦 Understanding system architecture and design trade-offs becomes a daunting task. Now, let's talk money.🤑 A+ developers come at a premium, and we want to leverage their skills where they shine brightest: coding. Have you run into this challenge? Are your tech docs hurting?📝😓

A post for all my connections, but especially my Junior connections. Check out Luke's advice below. As someone in the industry and a senior level, It's great to see people sharing valuable lessons and information to a much more junior community! Massive shout out to Luke Jennings!!🙌 #careeradvice #softwareengineering
To all those fresh faced associate/junior devs out there going through tech tests, this one is for you. As a tech lead that has been reviewing many technical test solutions recently for junior positions, please let me give you some advice on areas where you can shine and stand out from the rest. ✔ Understand the Requirements: If there is any ambiguity or confusion please reach out for clarification. You might feel like it could reflect poorly on you, but it is much better to seek clarification rather than spending 6+ hours on an incorrect solution. ✔ Handle Edge Cases: Don't just focus on the happy path. Consider edge cases and try to defend against the unknown as best as you can. Demonstrate how you handle them gracefully in your code. Custom error exceptions and sensible logging are very beneficial ✔ Clean and Readable Code: Ensure that both your code and project folder structure are easily readable. Use meaningful variable names, follow consistent coding conventions for your target language. Coding styles are largely company dependant and can be picked up on the job. I don't care if_you_do_this or doThis, but choose one and stick to it ✔ Add a README: Make sure you document your approach and provide any setup steps needed to run your solution. I've lost count the amount of times I've had to go manually looking for application entry points to get it running because a candidate had not provided simple to follow instructions. Bonus points if you provide a Makefile ✔ Correct use of design patterns: Make sure you think about which common design pattern would be best. Are you doing a lot of database work with different objects? Maybe a repository pattern would help break up your code. Do you need to act on GUI events? maybe an Observer pattern is your best option. Whatever the solution, there is likely a pattern that can be used ✔ Tests! Make sure you add unit tests, even better if you can mock the services in your application too ✨ Bonus round - Performance considerations: Where possible document potential performance pitfalls in your README. 9/10 your code does not have to run at scale, but if you know that a part of your code might start getting slow with increased traffic or increased data over time it's worth mentioning. It shows a keen eye for detail and scalability. Something that is not too common among junior engineers (or some seniors 😬 ) #juniordeveloper #softwaredevelopment #codingtips #careeradvice

Another post I created today for my thoughts over the weekend! 🚨 The Real Cost of Hiring the Wrong Python or Golang Developer 🚨 👉 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dvN2BmQz From my experience working with tech companies, I’ve seen how hiring the wrong developer can lead to wasted resources, missed deadlines, and serious product quality issues. When you're working with languages like Python and Golang, the stakes are even higher—especially for fast-growing companies in London and Cambridge. The wrong hire can: - Extend project timelines - Pile on technical debt - Undermine the quality of your product But the right hire? They’ll keep your projects on track, reduce technical debt, and help you scale faster. In my latest blog post, I break down the real cost of making the wrong hiring decision and share my insights on how to avoid these costly mistakes. 👉 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dvN2BmQz Hiring the right talent is critical—whether you’re building scalable systems with Golang or developing cutting-edge AI with Python, it pays to get it right from the start. #PytoGo #Python #Golang #Hiring #TechRecruitment #BackendDevelopment #AI #MachineLearning #TechHiring #LondonTech #CambridgeTech #SocodeRecruitment
