It can be hard to deal with uncomfortable or unwanted emotions. It’s even harder to be told to approach emotions without judgment without knowing what that looks like in action. Let me share a metaphor with you that will help put this into perspective! If you think of yourself as a manager of a hotel (hint: the hotel is you!) and you imagine a “negative” emotion (anger, pain, etc.) walks in, if you get hostile with them the situation is likely to escalate just like it would in the real world. When emotions are pushed away they tend to push back harder. One thing we can do instead is welcome them to our hotel (even though they aren’t our favorite guest) knowing that they will only be visiting temporarily. We can also practice being curious about our emotions by asking what brought them to the hotel for their visit and what they need during their stay. I.N. Tales: Pacing down my tempo Most people know me as energetic, always on the go, but not many know that I love slowing down at home. One of my favorite rituals is making coffee—though, I’m not sure it even counts as coffee. I use a percolator, which takes its time, and I always opt for oat milk and decaf. The coffee comes out of my grandmother's glass pot, the same one she always used. (The other one was for sugar, but now I use that one for oatmeal 😉). Slowing down one small thing in your day can really help soften your body and mind. It’s a reminder that it’s okay to take things at your own pace. What is something you slow down in your life?
