A very interesting article on the FT on a slow-down of corporates towards their net zero targets. The article, however, highlights how some investors are focusing much more on companies’ #sustainability and #esg plans rather than #sustainable reporting. Furthermore, governments and regulators need to take decisive actions on supporting the transition going forward, otherwise it will be extremely challenging for the corporate world to succeed. “...But large investors who believe that climate change creates long-term risks to financial returns are increasingly pressing for evidence of action, rather than ambition. For several years, groups such as Climate Action 100+, made up of 700 large investors, have pushed for companies to set net zero targets and outline risks around greenhouse gas emissions. Last year it shifted focus, moving away from what companies are disclosing to how they are actually implementing those climate plans. But many investors also say that companies have their hands tied by an unstable regulatory environment.”

Ambition matters, but it must be realistic. There are many mismatch out there that need to be addressed to prevent further rollback. Of course the story is far more complicated than that, but the first gap to be fillled is deep investment in education (especially for middle aged, educated and middle income) to fight unfounded gut feeling of average person that climate change is a huge risk already and the high cost that we have to pay collectively and individually will be much higher if we delay it further. We can’t ignore that there is a general pushback by the public because of the cost of living and the additional high burden asked by the transition. If we cannot diluite the action anymore, and we can’t, we need burden sharing and must be explained honestly to build collective engagement and participation. We will have higher inflation, higher rates and higher debt for longer, but any delay will make things even worse for anyone, government, corporates and individuals. The reality sometimes hurts, but lies rarely bring better results. Hence, we need to be realistic, but go ahead…like paying taxes…the more we are collectively the less we pay individually.

Momentum is building for more robust climate reporting in Australia. As of the 9th of September, both Houses passed the Treasury Laws Amendment (Financial Market Infrastructure and Other Measures) Bill 2024, meaning Mandatory Climate-Related Financial Disclosures will be coming into effect as of January 2025. In August 2024, we observed strong engagement in the issues around climate and nature-related financial disclosures at the Impact X Summit in Melbourne, where our colleague, Zarmeen Pavri, was in action as MC for the Investors Day. Senior Associate, Mikayla Rodger had the privilege of connecting with industry leaders and investors while at the event. “It is becoming clear to businesses that integration of sustainability practices across the supply chain and operations needs to begin now”, she commented. It's no longer a siloed responsibility but a strategic imperative for businesses both above the reporting threshold, and those scheduled for future reporting years. The sooner companies begin the better, as the systemic changes required to drive meaningful outcomes and create long-term value will take time to incorporate across the supply chain. While there are many challenges remaining, the insights shared by early adopters at the Summit underscored that these disclosures present an opportunity for value creation, not just another compliance hurdle. There was also a clear need for effective communication across supply chains, particularly with smaller suppliers to address Scope 3 emissions. “Many companies set their goals without realising how much work it would be to meet them, <…> likening it to the feel-good effect of buying a puppy at Christmas” Ouch… For a topic with such fundamental societal and environmental impact, I would like to think (hope?) that a bit more due diligence goes into committing serious amounts of capital & effort - corporate boardroom & government chamber alike? The kind of reversals & departures illustrated in this Financial Times article are detrimental to both the feasibility and the legitimacy of effective Climate policy.

Time Magazine have never been shy of controversy. No, I'm not talking about Person of the Year. Well, maybe we are. The implications of the incoming government in the US and their policies are being noticed globally, if not felt. People have asked me, why bother with climate reporting? Does climate reporting have any positive impact? Why do we spend so much effort on reporting, why not spend it on fixing the problem? Whether there is legislated mandatory reporting or not, I think the momentum for voluntary reporting driven by numerous stakeholders has already taken root. Investors want to know their funds are invested ethically and environmentally sustainably as well as in a financially prudent way. Businesses also recognise that in the long term, sustainability and efficiency in energy use makes business sense. In that sense, mandatory reporting isn't required. However, like much regulation, it levels the playing field for all businesses, and forces the hand of laggards. Further, reporting generally allows decision makers to focus their efforts towards areas of greatest impact. No reporting, even if it's internal to businesses only, no idea where to start. Whether one believes in anthropogenic climate change or not, one thing is clear, extreme weather and pollution are increasing and having impacts on business finances.
