Yesterday, I ordered a tankless water heater for a customer and realized that our pricing for the specific installation service we quoted had not been updated in years. We were not going to make any margin on the job. So what did we do? I called the customer and let him know that I had good news and great news. The good news was that this replacement would in fact solve his problem, and the great news is that he would be getting a killer deal. We would honor the original price we quoted even though the cost of the equipment had changed significantly. He was ecstatic! It’s hard as a business owner in home services to know you’re not making any money on a job, but our word and commitment is more important. This was modeled for me years ago when we added on to our home. We signed a fixed price contract with Rejuve Group just before the price of lumber and labor skyrocketed. They completed the project without ever asking for more money and did an excellent job. And I talk about it to this day! If your looking for a trustworthy home contractor that will do what’s right, they are out there. Post 3 - In the hopes of helping others, I am sharing lessons learned from our ongoing sewer line repair. Please take a few minutes to read the information below, so that you may be better informed then we were. When seeking plumbing services, consider these tips: Multiple Estimates: Obtain estimates from several providers. Compare pricing, services, and reviews. Avoid rushing into a decision based on the first quote you receive. Local Independent Plumbers: Look for local, independent plumbers (and HVAC) who know the area and have a vested interest in quality work. Check if they are licensed, insured, and have positive customer feedback. Roto-Rooter has a C- rating by the BBB. City of Grand Rapids has a list but here are a couple: McDonald Plumbing – 616-698-6771 Brik Plumbing – 616-277-1561 Avoid Nationwide Chains: Be cautious with nationwide franchises or heavily advertised companies, we used and deeply regret our choice of Roto-Rooter (i.e, All-Flow, Service Professor, Vredevoogd, etc.). Some may prioritize sales commissions over your best interests. I would also suggest that if you had any work done by Roto-Rooter that you have someone else come in and double check their work for your own peace of mind. If you made it all the way through those 3 posts you now have more information than we did and I hope it comes in handy, because “holy crap” pun intended, did we learn all of this the hard way.
