Research by our colleague, György Hámori on the dynamics and motivation of #communityfoundations. György conducted research on the group dynamics of #communityfoundations (CFs) in Hungary within the framework of the European Community Foundation Initiative-funded Learning Lab. The aim of the research is to draw conclusions on how motivational factors influence the work of community foundations and thus to gain a more accurate understanding of the activities of the Roots and Wings Foundation. Global crises continue to impact communities around the globe, and we risk losing generations of knowledge. By investing in scholars confined or displaced by violence, natural disasters, public health emergencies, or systemic injustice, we can preserve and uplift their lives and the numerous lives they touch. I am looking forward to meeting with our partners at the Scholar Rescue Fund Forum to discuss creating, sustaining, and expanding partnerships that will preserve human capital and empower communities throughout Europe. About the Forum: The IIE Scholar Rescue Fund Forum is a one-day conference that will convene a diverse set of more than 100 IIE-SRF stakeholders from Europe and around the world to highlight innovative partnerships and initiatives that are driving sustainable programming to support threatened and displaced scholars. Participants will learn from and be inspired by IIE-SRF partners across sectors and at the local, regional, and national levels whose efforts are enhancing existing support models and bridging geographic distances. We've been asked to partner with academia to share our conclusions. This effort would become hopelessly entangled if we asked 30,000 academic institutions to corroborate our conclusions. We offer something better. We invite open debate on these issues and are prepared to defend them in public at the moment. Let's start with this. An open note to the Wake Forest community at large and the Wake Forest Jewish community. The events of the past few weeks have demonstrated discussions about freedom of speech, students standing up for their rights and beliefs, faculty standing up for their rights, and an administration trying to support freedom of speech, their faculty, their students and their greater community. They have also shown how the world can come together when things don’t seem right. In the end, I believe the administration came to the right decision. Cancel the pro-Hamas anti-Semitic speaker on October 7. https://lnkd.in/etD5YxYN I know that this was not a simple decision. Faculty need to have the right to bring in speakers who represent all sides of important issues. However, it is the administration’s responsibility to make sure that whoever comes to our campus does not cause pain or fear in our community, nor stand for something contrary to the fundamental values at our core. Terrorism, is not one of those values. As we move forward from this event, we need to have a continuing conversation with our school from academic and administrative perspectives. I believe that this event was scheduled to intimidate, provoke and challenge the administration at the expense of our community. I would like to commend the administration and ask that my fellow Wake community members do the same. It is not easy or taken lightly for administration to cancel an academic sponsored event. I would suggest that we look forward, and have a constructive discussion about how we can make sure that this does not happen again. I do not believe this talk was scheduled for any good academic reason and was not in the best interest of our students. To quote the letter that my son sent to the department heads, “Wouldn't it make sense to bring in a scholar who can evoke productive and empathetic conversations towards all people? One who does not cause pain to any person in our community? Wouldn't it be better to support our students on this 1st anniversary of a murderous slaughter and wait a few weeks to have a conversation about how we can learn and grow into leaders who can find ways for all of us to live in peace and without terrorism?” This is what we should have seen from our faculty. I think the next step in the evolution of this controversy is to support our institution in ensuring that this is the approach taken towards the hard subjects that so desperately need conversation in a Pro Humanitate manner.
